Texas Tech softball made a loud entrance into Big 12 play, and the Red Raiders didn’t just win, they steamrolled Houston in every possible way.
Behind a no-hitter from NiJaree Canady and a monster offensive performance led by Kaitlyn Terry, Texas Tech rolled to 10-0 and 11-1 victories in a Friday doubleheader at Rocky Johnson Field.
The sweep pushed the Red Raiders to 24-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, and if anyone was wondering whether Tech belonged among the nation’s elite, the answer came quickly. Very quickly.
Canady set the tone in Game 1 with pure dominance. The star right-hander carved through Houston’s lineup, tossing her second no-hitter of the season while continuing one of the hottest pitching stretches in the country. Over her last three outings, Canady is 3-0 with 28 strikeouts and just one hit allowed across 15 innings.
While Canady handled business in the circle, the Red Raiders lineup unleashed chaos at the plate and on the base paths. Kaitlyn Terry was unstoppable, finishing the day 5-for-6 with seven RBIs, raising her absurd batting average from .560 to .589.
And she wasn’t alone. Mia Williams chipped in with three RBIs, Lauren Allred and Jackie Lis combined for multiple hits and runs driven in, and Hailey Toney added two doubles in Game 2.
Meanwhile, Mihyia Davis delivered one of the most electric performances of the day, launching two home runs in Game 1 and flashing defensive brilliance with a spectacular catch at the center-field wall.
If Houston blinked, Tech was already stealing another base.
The Red Raiders were a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen bases, constantly applying pressure and turning singles into scoring opportunities. Add in five sacrifice flies, nine walks, and only three strikeouts, and the offensive machine never slowed down.
In Game 2, Terry showed she can dominate both sides of the game. The ace improved to 10-0 in the circle, striking out key batters and keeping Houston from mounting any real comeback attempt.
Simply put, Texas Tech looked like a team with championship ambitions. And the Red Raiders aren’t done yet as they’ll chase a series sweep against Houston when the teams meet again Saturday afternoon.
