5-Star recruit Jalen Brewster was a huge get for Texas Tech, but another visit to a rival school adds to the noise of a potential flip.
Class of 2027 5-Star recruit Jalen Brewster is a huge prospect heading into his college career, with several outlets tabbing him as the No. 1-overall recruit in the cycle.
Texas Tech made a huge statement by landing Brewster's commitment back in October 2025 after several big-name programs all made pushes for him.
However, Brewster recently used an official visit to spend time at nearby SMU from his home in Cedar Hill. It is not quite time to sound the panic alarms in Lubbock, but the move shows that everything is not set in stone.

Rumors of a potential flip away from the Red Raiders had been swirling since the program switched up its coach staff, which impacted former defensive line coach Zarnell Fitch. Fitch, who was on staff when Brewster made his initial commitment, was let go in favor of Imarjaye Albury Sr. during the offseason.
Following the hometown stop with SMU, Rivals' Sam Spiegelman reported that SMU is a "big contender" in the sweepstakes to land Brewster if he was to reopen his commitment.
The visit with the Mustangs is not the first post-commitment move made by Brewster, with the highly-valued prospect using another official visit to meet with Indiana in late April. It is not just Brewster heading out, as coaches from Florida have also made the trip to Dallas to talk with him.
In the midst of all these meeting with other schools, Brewster traveled out to Lubbock for Texas Tech's spring game. The decision showcased a continued commitment in the Red Raiders and allowed fans to remain hopeful about his original decision.
With several moving pieces and ample time to change minds, it remains to be seen if any of these efforts will turn into a true turnaround from Brewster. And there is still no solid sign from Brewster himself that he is ready to move on from the Red Raiders.
If the nightmare scenario does become a reality, it would be a crushing blow for a Texas Tech program that does not have a history of landing the level of recruit Brewster is, especially if an in-state foe, like SMU, steals him away from Lubbock.
All Texas Tech fans can do now is hope that these efforts from vying suitors are all in vain and his decision to head to Lubbock endures through the wave of ongoing opposition.
