No. 2 Texas Tech softball finally hit a speed bump Friday night in Lubbock, and it was a big one.
In the opening game of a marquee Big 12 softball showdown, No. 12/13 Arizona stunned the Red Raiders with a 9-0 run-rule victory in five innings, handing Texas Tech just its second loss of the season.
The Wildcats’ power display flipped the script early and never allowed Tech to recover.
Texas Tech entered the matchup at 25-2 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play, riding one of the best starts in program history. But Arizona came into Lubbock ready to challenge that momentum and immediately took advantage of defensive miscues and timely hitting.
The decisive moment arrived in the third inning when Arizona’s offense exploded. Two Red Raider errors opened the door, and the Wildcats kicked it down.
Back-to-back home runs ignited the rally, including a three-run blast that quickly shifted control of the game. Arizona wasn’t done.
With the bases loaded shortly after, Grace Jenkins delivered the knockout punch - a grand slam that pushed the Wildcats to a commanding 9-0 lead.
For Texas Tech, ace NiJaree Canady showed flashes of dominance despite the tough stat line. The star pitcher struck out eight hitters in four innings, but Arizona’s big swings and defensive mistakes around her allowed the Wildcats to pile up nine runs, though only four were earned.
Reliever Samantha Lincoln provided a steady final frame for the Red Raiders, allowing just one baserunner while closing out the fifth inning.
Offensively, Texas Tech never found its rhythm against Arizona pitcher Jalen Adams. The Red Raiders were limited to four hits, including a double from Taylor Pannell and a single by Jasmyn Burns that briefly sparked hope in the fourth inning.
But with runners on second and third, Arizona shut the door with a pair of pop outs and a ground ball to escape the threat.
Despite the lopsided result, the series is far from over.
Texas Tech will get a chance at redemption Saturday when the teams meet again for a doubleheader beginning at noon, with the Red Raiders looking to respond and reclaim momentum in the Big 12 race.
