In the end of a weeks-long battle, Brendan Sorsby will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft and forgo his chance to play with Texas Tech this upcoming season.
LUBBOCK, TEXAS -- In a loaded day of news related to the Brendan Sorsby saga, the quarterback chose to silence all of the noise by reportedly entering his name into the NFL Supplemental Draft, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
The shocking decision comes after Sorsby earned a temporary injunction last Monday from Judge Ken Curry inside a Lubbock County District Court to regain his eligibility for one final season with Texas Tech.
While he got the result he hoped for in the courtroom, the court of public opinion was not as favorable to Sorsby, as several in the college football landscape called for Texas Tech to prevent him from suiting up regardless of the injunction being granted.
Texas Tech reiterated its support for Sorsby but never committed one way or another toward his ability to play for the Red Raiders. However, this vagueness led many to believe that Sorsby would inevitably take the field in Lubbock, which created even more chaos.
The Big 12 met with its athletic directors and began to swirl the ideas of sanctioning Texas Tech if it chose to allow Sorsby to compete. This led Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to issue a statement in support of the Red Raiders and claimed that any action taken against them by the conference would be challenged legally.
In true domino effect fashion, Paxton's threat was met by action from the Big 12, as the conference filed a complaint to a North Texas District Court on Monday to confirm its ability to enforce by-laws on its members.
Another legal step happened Monday, as the NCAA formally appealed the decision by Curry with an emergency motion to the Seventh Court of Appeals located in Amarillo. The NCAA asked that the court take up the case and issue its ruling by August 28, which would have been one day before the college football season began.
With all the drama and theatrics mounting around him and the university he wished to play for, Sorsby eliminated the need for any more discourse with his ultimate choice to forgo his final collegiate season and turn pro.
The deadline for the NFL Supplemental Draft was scheduled for June 22 and it was presumed that Sorsby would not be a part of it, however, he will be the main storyline when it does take place.
Sorsby will look to close the chapter on a college career that had a rocky finish and begin a new story with a prospective NFL franchise that looks to give him the opportunity to continue his football tenure.
