The defensive trenches in Lubbock are about to look a little different next year.
Multiple reports indicate that Zarnell Fitch, the defensive line coach who has been a staple of Joey McGuire’s staff since the beginning, will not be returning to Texas Tech for the upcoming season.
Fitch joined the Red Raiders before the 2022 campaign, making the jump from TCU, where he had coached since 2016. His departure marks the end of a four-year run in Lubbock, where he was instrumental in developing some of the most recognizable names on the roster.
During his tenure, Fitch oversaw the growth of program mainstays Tony Bradford and Jaylon Hutchings, both of whom earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention nods under his tutelage.
Perhaps the biggest feather in Fitch's cap during his time with the Red Raiders was the meteoric rise of Lee Hunter. Under Fitch’s guidance, Hunter blossomed into a dominant force on the interior, racking up two All-American selections and a First Team All-Big 12 spot.
Fitch’s impact wasn't just felt on Saturdays, but also on the recruiting trail.
He played a massive role in securing a future for the Red Raiders, landing high-profile commitments from the Class of 2027. This includes K’Adrian Redmond, a 4-star talent out of DeSoto, and the crown jewel of the class, Jalen Brewster. Brewster, a Cedar Hill product, currently sits as the No. 1 overall prospect in the country according to Rivals.
While losing a veteran coach and recruiter is never easy, Texas Tech has already been proactive in bolstering the roster for the 2026 season.
The Red Raiders have utilized the transfer portal to bring in proven talent, notably signing Mateen Ibirogba from Wake Forest and Bryce Butler from Washington.
As the program searches for Fitch’s successor, the focus remains on maintaining the physical, aggressive identity the defensive line has established over the last few years.
With a mix of veteran transfers and elite incoming high school talent, the foundation remains strong for whoever takes over the whistle in the trenches.
