Texas Tech turns to Will Hammond after Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility collapse, handing the young quarterback control of a season loaded with pressure.
Texas Tech football finally has its answer at quarterback, and it isn’t the one the Red Raiders expected when the offseason began.
Will Hammond has been named Texas Tech’s starting quarterback following Brendan Sorsby’s exit from the program, turning what appeared to be a high-profile transfer takeover into a sudden youth movement in Lubbock.
The announcement came through the school’s official X account, ending any remaining suspense around the roster’s most important position.
Sorsby arrived from Cincinnati with experience, production and legitimate NFL potential. Instead, his Texas Tech chapter ended before it ever reached kickoff.
An NCAA investigation determined that Sorsby had placed more than 1,000 wagers across multiple sports, including contests involving teams he played for.
The reported activity included more than $90,000 in total bets and over $6,000 wagered on other college football games. Sorsby admitted to the conduct, and although he was initially ruled eligible, that decision didn’t hold.
Eventually, Texas Tech and Sorsby went their separate ways.
That leaves Hammond with the keys—and no shortage of pressure.
The young quarterback hasn’t been a full-time starter, but he’s no mystery, either. Hammond has appeared in 12 games for the Red Raiders, throwing for 1,151 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
His most significant opportunity came when Behren Morton was injured against Utah on Sept. 20, forcing Hammond into meaningful action against a quality opponent.
Now the emergency option becomes the plan.
Hammond’s talent has never been the concern. He’s shown enough arm strength, mobility and confidence to make Texas Tech believe he can run the offense.
The real question is whether he can handle an entire season in which every opposing defense will prepare specifically to stop him.
There’s also no veteran safety net arriving to rescue the Red Raiders if the transition gets rocky. Hammond must grow up quickly, command the locker room and prove Texas Tech’s season didn’t leave town with Sorsby.
The circumstances are messy, but the opportunity is massive.

Texas Tech didn’t choose this quarterback path. It was forced onto it by one of the strangest offseason collapses in college football.
But if Hammond transforms his limited experience into a breakout season, the Red Raiders may eventually view this chaos as the moment their future arrived early.
