Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility battle with the NCAA could move to Lubbock court as Texas Tech’s quarterback waits on a ruling.
Brendan Sorsby’s NCAA eligibility situation could become the next major legal fight in college sports.
The Texas Tech quarterback is waiting for an NCAA decision tied to allegations of habitual gambling, but if that answer doesn’t come quickly or favorably, Sorsby could challenge the NCAA in Lubbock District Court.

That venue matters because Texas Tech is located in Lubbock County, giving Sorsby a local legal path if the case escalates.
Sorsby has reportedly hired Jeffrey Kessler, one of the most influential sports labor and antitrust attorneys in the country.
Kessler has played a central role in legal battles that reshaped athlete compensation, making his involvement a significant signal that Sorsby’s camp is preparing for a serious fight if needed.
The timeline is tight. Sorsby needs clarity before the 2026 season, and possibly before pursuing the NFL supplemental draft if his college eligibility is jeopardized.
NCAA cases can drag out, which makes speed a major factor.
The issue reportedly stems from gambling activity that included a bet involving his own team while he was a freshman at Indiana, though he did not play in that game.
He also allegedly placed many small wagers, often $1 or $2, on other sports.
Texas Tech won’t pay for Sorsby’s legal action because NCAA rules bar schools from funding lawsuits against the association.
Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech after leaving Cincinnati, where the athletic department was reportedly alerted to his gambling issue last August.
He’s also currently in a separate legal dispute with Cincinnati over buyout terms.
For now, Sorsby is still seeking an NCAA resolution. But if that ruling doesn’t come soon, this could quickly become a court case with major eligibility stakes.
