Top quarterback Brendan Sorsby visited Lubbock. With numerous positive signs, is Texas Tech landing college football's portal QB prize?

Maybe it's about the optimistic mood that permeates the Texas Tech football program right now - yes, it remains in place even after the Red Raiders' 23-0 loss to Oregon in the College Football Playoffs.

Or maybe it's because so many signs point positively to coach Joey McGuire's budding powerhouse in Lubbock being a drawing card ...

Especially as it relates to the No. 1 quarterback in the portal market.

Brendan Sorsby is 6-3 and 235. He was a three-star recruit out of Lake Dallas High School and then spent two seasons at Indiana, (he redshirted in 2022 and played in 2023) before moving for the past two seasons at Cincinnati, where he has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in college football.

On Dec. 15, Sorsby announced he would enter the transfer portal.

And on Friday, the first day for visits to take place, Sorsby was in Lubbock.

As it happens, the Red Raiders have a quarterback vacancy after this season as Behren Morton moves on and as backup quarterback Will Hammond is rehabbing a torn ACL.

Also has it happens, beyond the Texas connection, Sorsby's girlfriend Gretchen Sigman, a standout volleyball player at Cincinnati, just transferred to Tech.

Oh, and just in case it matters, Sorsby's Instagram is overflowing with comments from prospective future Lubbock teammates.

Do those hints lead Sorsby to town?

The Red Raiders could reportedly invest $5 million in this particular signing, as billionaire booster Cody Campbell helps McGuire power the program toward the top.

As it stands, Tech's recruiting class is considered top-20 in the nation.

The Red Raiders seem to be jousting with LSU for the right to sign Sorsby, who last year threw for nearly 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns against just five interceptions for the Bearcats.

He also rushed for more than 500 yards and scored nine times on the ground.

The chess match - and the hints - could see Texas Tech making a major statement about where this program is ... and where it believes it is going.
