No. 8 Texas Tech is off to a 6-0 start for the second straight year and look to keep the winning streak alive in Cincinnati. Can the Red Raiders do what last year's team could not and reach the elusive mark?
LUBBOCK -- The season is rolling along for No. 8 Texas Tech, as the Red Raiders are set to pay a visit to Nippert Stadium where Cincinnati awaits on Saturday morning.
It is uncharted territory for the program, which has never made the trip to the Queen City in the brief all-time series history with the Bearcats.
While the destination may be unfamiliar, Texas Tech is aiming for a result that has been all too common in its recent Big 12 outings.
Dating back to the 2024 season, the Red Raiders have won 14 of their last 15 contests within the conference, including the Big 12 Championship against BYU a year ago.
The latest recipient of this newfound dominance was Arizona State, which handed Texas Tech its lone loss in that aforementioned stretch.
However, the Red Raiders enacted their revenge in a 53-25 beatdown in Lubbock last Saturday.
Despite the hefty amount of success, one hiccup could put the program in dire straits, especially with the apparent improvement of several other teams in the league.
Texas Tech stands alone as one of six unbeaten teams in college football entering week eight, but two of the others in that exclusive group also hail from the Big 12.
After being handled by only Texas Tech last season, No. 2 BYU has surged back to the forefront of the conference race and No. 10 Utah has once again emerged as a serious threat, with dates left with both Cougars from the Big 12 in BYU and Houston.
Despite the pursuit of perfection that has been heightened by the higher stakes, it remains a tough task to accomplish the feat.
Even the legendary team that came out of Lubbock last season was unable to keep from tripping up after Texas Tech had the lone blemish to the Sun Devils.
In poetic fashion, the Red Raiders ran out to a 6-0 record before taking the tumble in Tempe, which is the same record that Texas Tech holds heading into Cincinnati.
There were obviously other factors in play that led to the eventual upset by Arizona State, but it is also not a controversial statement to say that it was the team's worst performance of the year, all things considered.
Unlike their predecessors, however, this incarnation of the Red Raiders has flirted with disaster more often than showcasing its dominance.
Last week's win over Arizona State was the first time that Texas Tech led by more than two scores at halftime and is the second time it has gone on to win by more than 25 points.
That span included games against Abilene Christian and Sam Houston State, while also mixing in a 28-26 victory over Houston that is growing more impressive with each passing week.
But with all those differences taken into account, this year's squad still has the chance to accomplish one of the only things that last year's could not, reach the 7-0 milestone.
In fact, it would be only the fifth time in program history and first since 2013 the record has been reached.
The Red Raiders' up-and-down nature took its first step toward consistency following their latest win, but it is up to them to continue moving forward instead of sliding back.
Texas Tech cannot get complacent against the Bearcats, whether history favors them or not, and the Red Raiders can definitely not afford to slip into the slump that nearly cost them at least one game earlier this season.
No one said that being perfect was easy, in college football or beyond, but the Red Raiders can get one step closer to the elusive mark by taking care of a Cincinnati team that has every reason to knock them off.
