Kliff Kingsbury is back in the spotlight and back on a contender’s sideline. The Los Angeles Rams announced Monday that the former Texas Tech quarterback and head coach has been hired as assistant head coach under Sean McVay.
It’s another high-profile chapter for Kingsbury, whose name circulated heavily this offseason as NFL teams shuffled staffs.
After two years calling plays for the Washington Commanders, Kingsbury was linked to multiple openings across the league.
Reports had him interviewing with the Baltimore Ravens for both head coach and offensive coordinator roles, while also meeting with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants regarding offensive coordinator positions.
Instead of taking over an offense elsewhere, he’ll now join one of the NFL’s most respected coaching trees in Los Angeles.
Kingsbury’s career arc has never been linear, but it’s never been boring either.
He led Texas Tech from 2013 to 2018, becoming one of the faces of the Air Raid era in Lubbock. Before that, he was the Red Raiders’ record-setting quarterback, known for lighting up scoreboards in the Big 12. After his college head coaching stint, Kingsbury jumped straight to the NFL as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022. His tenure ended after a 4-13 season in 2022, but his offensive mind remained in demand.
He spent 2023 at USC as a senior offensive analyst under Lincoln Riley before returning to the NFL with Washington.
Kingsbury was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 2023 alongside his former head coach, the late Mike Leach, a fitting nod to his roots in the Air Raid revolution.
He’s not the only former Red Raider rising in the NFL ranks this cycle.
Davis Webb, who threw for 5,557 yards at Texas Tech under Kingsbury, was promoted to offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.
For Kingsbury, the Rams role isn’t just another job, it’s another swing at shaping NFL offenses ... this time on a team built to compete now.
