No. 8 Texas Tech is headed out to Cincinnati for a road test against the Bearcats and head coach Joey McGuire knows that the trip will but anything but a vacation for the Red Raiders.
LUBBOCK -- No. 8 Texas Tech is looking to live up to its biggest performance of the season in its first-ever trip to Cincinnati on Saturday.
The Red Raiders tore through Arizona State 53-25 in front of a sold-out crowd at Lubbock's Galaxy Stadium to punctuate the university's Homecoming celebrations.
While no team has been able to take down Texas Tech in six tries, the Red Raiders did themselves no favors in their previous five matchups before the breakout over the Sun Devils.
It is never easy to go undefeated, just look around the rest of the sport, which saw the number of unbeaten teams dwindle down to six entering week eight.
Add on to the pressure of setting foot into Nippert Stadium for the first time and there are high stakes off of the huge win a week ago.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire previewed the pivotal road matchup with Cincinnati during his weekly media availability.
"You start looking around college football right now, there's so many people that you're not expecting to lose, [that] lose on a Saturday," remarked McGuire. "There's so many things going crazy in college football."
For those that may be checking into the season this week, McGuire is undoubtedly referring to the unprecedented amount of chaos that ravaged the upper tier of the sport this past weekend.
That included six of the nation's top 10 teams going down, as Texas Tech and fellow Big 12 mate BYU made up half of that group that emerged unscathed.
Although the upset bug did not strike the Red Raiders against Arizona State, McGuire knows that his team cannot get complacent heading into Saturday.
"We have too much in front of us. We are still nowhere close to the team that we can be," he explained.
"And so to focus on anything other than football...no matter who we're playing, I think would start taking away from what we're trying to do."
Although Texas Tech has no history in the venue, Cincinnati has established a tradition of winning on its home field.
In their last 10 outings at Nippert Stadium, the Bearcats at 8-2 and are unbeaten at home this season.
McGuire addressed the issues this hostile location could create for his team in their debut.
"I'm expecting a great environment, so I'm really excited about that. It's a really great atmosphere ... 8-2 at home is impressive ... so we've got our work cut out for us," said McGuire.
Texas Tech will see if that hard work pays off when the Red Raiders head to Cincinnati on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT for a Big 12 bout with the Bearcats.
