If there was any doubt about who still runs the Big 12, JT Toppin wasted no time erasing it.
The reigning conference Player of the Year added another line to his growing body of work Monday, earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors after powering Texas Tech to a statement-opening win in league play.
It’s Toppin's first weekly award of his junior season, and it comes exactly how Red Raider fans have come to expect it ... dominant, physical, and relentless.
Against Oklahoma State, Toppin bullied his way to 23 points and 14 rebounds, his eighth double-double of the season and third straight overall. The Cowboys had no answer for his activity on the glass or his efficiency inside, as Toppin finished 10-of-19 from the field, grabbed five offensive rebounds, and controlled the paint from start to finish.
That performance pushed him back into the national spotlight just days before a massive road test at Houston - and reminded the league why he was voted both Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year.
Through 14 games, Toppin is putting together one of the most complete stat lines in college basketball. He's averaging 21.2 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12 in scoring and second in rebounding. His 4.7 offensive rebounds per game lead the conference and rank among the nation's best, while his 119 made field goals are also tops in the Big 12.
Toppin has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, eclipsed 20 points seven times this season, and now owns 39 career double-doubles, the third-most among all active Division I players.
He enters his 83rd collegiate game with 1,322 career points and 777 rebounds, numbers that continue to climb at an alarming pace.
Last season's accolades already cemented his reputation - Consensus Second Team All-America, Big 12 Player of the Year, and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year - but this year feels different.
Toppin is setting the tone for a Texas Tech team with real Big 12 and postseason ambitions.
His Player of the Week nod marks the third time a Red Raider has claimed the honor this season, joining teammate Christian Anderson, who took home the award twice earlier in the year.
Toppin was also named to the Big 12 Starting Five, sharing the spotlight with AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Riley Kugel (UCF), Joshua Jefferson (Iowa State), and Milan Momcilovic (Iowa State).
Now, the spotlight turns to the road.
Texas Tech opens a two-game swing at Houston before heading to Colorado, with Toppin once again positioned as the centerpiece.
