Where does Joey McGuire stand among the best coaches in Red Raider football history?

LUBBOCK - With No. 11 Texas Tech's 29-7 win over Colorado in Boulder last weekend, Joey McGuire improved his head coaching record to 40-18 with the Red Raiders.

He became the fastest Texas Tech coach ever to reach 40 career wins. The Red Raiders improved to 5-0 for the second season in a row, which is also a first in program history.

As Tech enters the bye week, McGuire got to reflect on the milestone on his weekly podcast with senior administrator Robert Giovanetti.

"It's pretty awesome," McGuire said. "What I'm gonna say is the fastest coaching staff [to reach the milestone]. We have got such an incredible group of people that work with these young people, that get us to where we need to be. And then we got incredible backing - you can't not credit Red Raider Nation and everybody that's been a part of whenever the Matador began and now the Red Raider Club - we're all in this together."

Since being hired ahead of the 2022 season, McGuire & Co. have turned Texas Tech into one of the winningest programs in the country, especially in the Big 12 Conference. The win over the Buffaloes was Tech's 26th conference win under McGuire, which is the most in the conference in that span.

Since the start of last season, the Red Raiders have been near the top of college football entirely. Tech is 17-2 in the regular season, which matches the record for Georgia and trails only the reigning national champion Indiana Hoosiers, who have carried their undefeated 2025 season into a 5-0 start in 2026.

When it comes to his success in particular, McGuire was not shy about setting his eyes on further benchmarks.

"I have goals, you know, as an individual and as a coach. One, I do want to be the winningest at Texas Tech."

McGuire's 40 wins are the seventh-most in program history. If Texas Tech wins five more games this season, McGuire will move into sixth place, surpassing J.T. King. The late Mike Leach owns the record with 84 wins across 10 seasons at the helm.

McGuire's career winning percentage (.690) at Texas Tech is second only to Pete Cawthorn's (.729) tenure from 1932-40.

McGuire added that he has a target for "200 plus" wins as a head coach on his radar, as well.

While at Cedar Hill from 2003-16, McGuire compiled a record of 141-42, helping the Longhorns to seven district titles and the program's first three state championships (2006, 2013, 2014).

With 181 under his belt, 200 feels plenty achievable for McGuire, who joked that he might not be young enough to hit the number. McGuire turned 55 this August.

"Let's set it to 300 then," Giovanetti quips.

"So, let's go get it," McGuire responded. "We've got a lot in front of us."
