No. 8 Texas Tech takes its unbeaten record to Cincinnati Saturday as Will Hammond and the Red Raiders chase a 7-0 start and another critical Big 12 victory.

Texas Tech football has climbed to No. 8 nationally, remains undefeated and is firmly in the Big 12 championship conversation. But Saturday's road trip to Cincinnati presents exactly the kind of challenge that can derail a promising season.

The Red Raiders (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) visit the Bearcats (4-2, 1-2) at Nippert Stadium for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff on FS1, looking to secure the program's first 7-0 start since 2013.

Coach Joey McGuire's team enters with considerable momentum after dismantling Arizona State 53-25 last weekend.

Quarterback Will Hammond delivered one of his most complete performances, throwing for 232 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score. Running back J'Koby Williams exploded for 165 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, while Kenny Johnson caught seven passes for 120 yards.

Texas Tech generated 502 total yards, including 404 before halftime, and built a commanding 43-10 lead.

But Cincinnati won't be an easy opponent.

The Bearcats are coming off a heartbreaking 45-42 loss at West Virginia, where quarterback JC French threw for a career-high 389 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

French has attempted 153 passes this season without throwing a pick, presenting an interesting challenge for a Texas Tech defense that has forced 12 turnovers, including four returned for touchdowns.

Cincinnati running back Cole Tabb also presents a significant threat after rushing for 118 yards against West Virginia. The Bearcats average 231.2 rushing yards per game, ranking among the nation's top rushing attacks.

Fortunately for Texas Tech, stopping the run has been a strength.

The Red Raiders rank fifth nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 82 yards per game. Their ability to control Cincinnati's ground game could determine whether French faces manageable passing situations or must repeatedly challenge Tech's opportunistic secondary.

"We've got to continue to play our brand of football," McGuire has emphasized throughout the season.

Another factor is the setting.

Cincinnati celebrates its 100th Homecoming game Saturday, and the Bearcats are 21-5 in Homecoming contests since 2000.

Texas Tech also remembers what happened during its previous meeting with Cincinnati. The Red Raiders needed a late defensive stand to survive a 44-41 shootout in Lubbock in 2024.

Saturday's stakes extend beyond remaining undefeated.

Texas Tech can improve to 4-0 in Big 12 play for just the fourth time while strengthening its College Football Playoff résumé.

The Red Raiders also host No. 25 Arizona on Halloween, making it tempting to look ahead.

That's precisely what McGuire must prevent.

The Bearcats have enough offensive firepower to make things uncomfortable, but Texas Tech's defensive pressure and increasingly explosive running game should provide the difference.

For the Red Raiders, Saturday isn't about style points.

It's about protecting a perfect season and taking another step toward a Big 12 championship.
