Former Texas Tech guard and 3-time Slam Dunk champion Mac McClung is the new all-time leading scorer in G-League history.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Mac McClung made a name for himself as a high school All-American with high-flying dunks that defied what fans thought were possible for a 6-2 guard.

He broke Allen Iverson's high school scoring record in Virginia, then after two seasons with the Georgetown Hoyas, McClung took his talents to Texas Tech and competed for the Red Raiders in the 2020-21 season.

Now, McClung has yet to find a solid home in the NBA, but he continues etching his name into the record books.

This week, McClung became the NBA G-League's all-time leading scorer...

Sort of?

When searching the G-League record books on Basketball Reference, you'll find that McClung actually sits 14th overall with 3,579 points, which is over 1,500 less than Renaldo Major for the top spot.

However, the G-League has marketed McClung as its new all-time scoring king after a monster 59-point performance in his Windy City Bulls' win over the Birmingham Squadron on Tuesday.

He's being credited with the title, but even on the G-Leauge's own website, McClung's scoring still sits 14th all-time, but with 3,584 points.

The league's website landing page claims McClung has the record "across the Tip-Off Tournament, regular season, and playoffs," but even those numbers are skewed.

Adding McClung's regular-season total with his playoff points (285) and Tip-Off Tournament points (1,168), he's still sitting below Major and Vander Blue's totals, with numbers all in accordance to the league's own archives.

In the end it's likely that McClung can officially break the scoring marks if he plays in the G-League next season, though this promotion of the record appears to be premature and potentially miscalculated.

McClung still hopes to carve himself a role in the NBA one day - outside of his three Slam Dunk championships during previous All-Star weekends - but he's dominated the G-League circuit since moving on from Lubbock and entering the professional ranks.

This season, McClung is averaging over 30 points per game. His 59-point explosion on Tuesday saw him shoot 19-of-34 in 42 minutes of action. Miraculously, he shot just 10 free throws.

That's a stark contrast workload from the 83-point game Miami's Bam Adebayo posted weeks prior to surpass Kobe Bryant's iconic 81-point career high. Adebayo needed over 30 free throws made to hit that mark.

McClung's big night now sits third all-time in G-League history for a single game behind Russ Smith's 65 and Jordan McRae's 61.

With the Red Raiders, McClung averaged 15.5 points on over 41 percent shooting in 30 minutes per game.
