Texas Tech stayed hot in June, landing three-star athlete Zayden Smith as the Red Raiders continue building a top-10 2027 recruiting class.

Texas Tech football isn’t slowing down on the 2027 recruiting trail.

The Red Raiders added another piece to one of the hottest classes in the country, landing three-star athlete Zayden Smith out of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Smith announced his commitment on social media after taking an official visit to Lubbock, giving Texas Tech its 17th pledge in the cycle and ninth commitment of June.

Nine commitments in one month.

Joey McGuire’s staff moved fast here. Texas Tech offered Smith on June 8, got him on campus soon after and closed the deal during his visit weekend.

That says plenty about how aggressively the Red Raiders are attacking the 2027 class.

Smith is listed as the No. 627 overall prospect and No. 39 athlete in the 247Sports Composite.

He also checks in as the No. 18 player in Pennsylvania, giving Texas Tech another out-of-state win as the program expands its recruiting reach.

The appeal is obvious. Smith brings two-way production from Cumberland Valley, where he made an impact at wide receiver and safety.

As a junior, he caught 36 passes for 442 yards and seven touchdowns while also recording 41 tackles and four interceptions on defense.

That versatility gives Texas Tech options. Smith could project as a defensive back, receiver or general athlete depending on how his body and skill set develop.

Players who can make plays on both sides of the ball are valuable, especially in a class already loaded with high-end talent.

The bigger story is the momentum around the Red Raiders. Texas Tech’s 2027 class is ranked No. 7 nationally and No. 1 in the Big 12 by 247Sports.

Twelve of the commitments are rated as four- or five-star prospects, headlined by No. 1 overall recruit Jalen Brewster.

Smith may not be the biggest name in the class, but he adds more speed, production and flexibility to a group that’s quickly becoming impossible to ignore.

Texas Tech is recruiting like a Big 12 bully right now.
