With the transfer portal set to open on January 2, Texas Tech football may be eyeing one of the biggest names expected to hit the market in Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt.
According to On3's Steve Wiltfong, Leavitt's camp is "actively shopping" the sophomore signal caller to high-level programs as the Sun Devils prepare for a potential major roster shakeup.
While Leavitt hasn't officially entered the portal yet, sources close to his team are calling a return to ASU in 2026 "doubtful."

This could open the door for Texas Tech, a program with both Big 12 familiarity and financial firepower to make a serious run at the talented QB.
The Red Raiders have long been seen as a team willing to invest big in elite transfers, and with Behren Morton's eligibility winding down, Joey McGuire could be in the market for a top-tier replacement.
Leavitt, who already made waves in the Big 12 before suffering a season-ending injury, fits the mold of a high-upside passer who could thrive in Lubbock's offensive system.
Leavitt's NIL value is reportedly $1.9 million, a price tag not every program can match. But with Texas Tech's well-funded backing and proven commitment to the portal, they're one of the few programs with the resources to make it happen.
While other programs like Miami and Vanderbilt have also been floated as potential landing spots, McGuire’s familiarity with Leavitt's talent, plus the Red Raiders' immediate need for a plug-and-play QB, makes this a very real possibility.

For now, Leavitt's camp - led by his brother and agent Dallin Leavitt of CAA - is staying quiet. Dallin even posted a vague rebuttal to On3's report, stating that no decision has been made.
But the writing may already be on the wall.
After a 2025 season that fell short of expectations in Tempe, Leavitt could be looking for a fresh start. And if Texas Tech wants to make noise in 2026, landing a game-changing quarterback like Sam Leavitt would be one hell of a statement.
Let the portal games begin.
