Texas Tech football recruiting is heating up again, and four-star linebacker Jhadyn Nelson may be the next major piece of the Red Raiders’ fast-rising 2027 recruiting class.
Head coach Joey McGuire and his staff have already built early momentum in the cycle, particularly along the defensive line. Now the Red Raiders are shifting their focus to linebacker, and Nelson has quickly emerged as one of their top targets.
Even more intriguing? Texas Tech was the first program to offer Nelson a scholarship back on Jan. 30, and that early trust appears to be paying off.
Recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman of On3 recently projected Nelson to land in Lubbock, and the Rivals prediction machine currently gives Texas Tech an 84.7 percent chance to secure his commitment.
For a program that has made Texas recruiting the foundation of its roster rebuild, Nelson would be a major in-state win.
The Langham Creek High School standout from Houston exploded onto the recruiting radar during his junior season.
In just 10 games, Nelson racked up 71 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, a pick-six and three forced fumbles. His combination of speed, instincts and physicality has made him one of the most disruptive defensive prospects in the state.
Recruiting rankings reflect that production. Nelson is currently listed as the No. 181 overall prospect nationally, the No. 16 linebacker in the 2027 class, and the No. 26 player in Texas according to the Rivals Industry Ranking.
Despite Texas Tech’s early lead, the battle for Nelson is far from over.
Several major programs have already scheduled official visits with the talented linebacker. Nelson plans to visit Texas, SMU, Kansas State, Ohio State, TCU and Houston, creating a competitive recruiting race.
His official visit to Texas Tech is scheduled for June 10, a trip that could prove crucial in maintaining the Red Raiders’ momentum.
Texas Tech’s recruiting strategy has been clear ... dominate in-state talent.
Of the program’s five current commitments in the 2027 class, four already come from Texas, and three rank among the state’s top prospects.
If Nelson ultimately chooses Lubbock, it would be another statement that McGuire’s Texas-first recruiting blueprint is working.
