Texas Tech opens Big 12 play against unbeaten Houston in a Friday night matchup featuring two ranked teams, explosive quarterbacks and plenty of history.
Texas Tech returns home Friday night for its biggest test of the young season, and the stakes are immediately higher.
The Red Raiders host Houston in their Big 12 opener, matching a pair of 2-0 teams in a nationally televised game at 7 p.m. Central on FOX. Texas Tech enters after a 35-24 road win at Oregon State, while Houston is coming off a 77-6 demolition of Southern.
For Joey McGuire’s team, this is the first real measuring stick of conference play.
Texas Tech had to fight through adversity in Corvallis. The Red Raiders trailed Oregon State 24-21 in the fourth quarter before Will Hammond hit Coy Eakin for a 32-yard touchdown that put Tech back in front.
J’Koby Williams added 116 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving the offense a much-needed boost on the ground.
McGuire called the comeback a reflection of his team’s ability to “keep fighting,” and that mentality could matter against a Houston team that has looked dangerous on both sides of the ball.
The Cougars were nearly flawless offensively last week.
Conner Weigman completed nine of 12 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns against Southern, while freshman Keisean Henderson went 6-for-7 for 83 yards and two scores.
Henderson also broke loose for a 54-yard rushing touchdown.
Houston piled up 388 rushing yards and scored on 11 consecutive possessions in the 77-6 win. Zane Smith led the ground attack with 69 yards, while Koby Young paced the receiving group with 54 yards.
The Cougars also bring some legitimate defensive strength. Cornerback Jalen Mayo has emerged as one of the better players in Houston’s secondary, giving Texas Tech’s passing game another challenge.
History, however, favors the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech has won seven straight meetings against Houston, including a 35-11 victory in 2025 and a 49-28 win in Lubbock in 2023. Houston still owns the slight edge in the all-time series, 18-17-1.
None of that will matter much once Friday night arrives.
Houston is unbeaten. Texas Tech is unbeaten. Both teams believe they belong in the Big 12 race.
Now one of them gets the chance to prove it under the lights.
