Mahomes tore his ACL last season, but the former Red Raider is making great progress this offseason.
Former Texas Tech star Patrick Mahomes is slowly ticking off the boxes in his rehab from an ACL injury suffered last season.
Mahomes has made it clear that he wants to be starting Week 1, but most know that is a bold claim.
For Patrick to even be considered for the Chiefs' season opener, he'll likely need at least a good month or so of practice at training camp so the organization can feel confident in his ability to perform at a high level.
As the Chiefs began their offseason workouts for their rookies, head coach Andy Reid oversaw the program, with his quarterback still a big question mark.
We have seen videos online of Mahomes throwing and doing little walk-throughs with his knee bandaged. So, progress was being made.
But how much progress?

Well, Reid gave an update on the former Red Raider.
"He is in a good position to be able to do some things," Reid said via ESPN. "If he can do some things, [he'll do it]. Phase 2 [of the offseason program], remember, there's no contact and there's no offense versus defense. It's Phase 3 that you get into that. ... He's in a position where he can do everything, I think."
So things appear to be moving in a positive direction, but let's make one thing clear here: the Chiefs will not push or rush No. 15 back.
It is likely to be a slow and steady approach, as we know that players, when they come back, aren't usually themselves, both physically and mentally, because they don't fully trust their knee.
So, Patrick - amid talk of him playing in Week 1 - could have the same issues if he's out on the field earlier.
Even Robert Griffin III said Mahomes should take the entire 2026 season off to get fully healthy, but Patrick has made it clear what his ideal return date is.
As the offseason continues, the Chiefs will gradually put more on No. 15's plate as he pushes for that Week 1 start, but caution will be the name of the game.
But right now, Mahomes seem to be in a good place in his recovery. The trick is to stay there.
