Texas Tech’s rebuilt roster gets an early measuring stick with an Oct. 23 exhibition at Kentucky, giving the Red Raiders a rare trip back to Rupp Arena.
Texas Tech basketball isn’t easing into the 2026-27 season.
The Red Raiders will travel to Rupp Arena on Oct. 23 for an exhibition against Kentucky, giving Grant McCasland’s retooled roster a high-profile test before the games begin to count.
That’s a pretty serious dress rehearsal.
Texas Tech has been busy reshaping the roster this summer, highlighted by the return of Donovan Atwell after he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls and spent time in the NBA Summer League.
The Red Raiders also added Amari Barrett, Bassala Bagayoko, Jamichael Still and Darrion Williams, giving the program a deeper and more intriguing mix of size, scoring and experience.
Now they’ll get to see how that group looks in one of college basketball’s toughest environments.
The Kentucky exhibition comes just over a week before Texas Tech opens its regular-season non-conference schedule against Jackson State on Nov. 2. For a roster with so many new pieces, the timing is ideal.
You don’t learn much from beating up on yourself in practice.
You learn a lot from playing Kentucky in Rupp.
Texas Tech and Kentucky have met five times previously, with the Wildcats winning all five. The Red Raiders haven’t played in Lexington since the 1986-87 season, when Kentucky escaped with a 66-60 victory.
The most recent meeting came in January 2020, and that one was much tighter. Kentucky beat Texas Tech 76-74 in overtime in Lubbock.
So while this one won’t officially count in the standings, there’s enough history and enough brand power to make it feel bigger than a normal exhibition.
Both programs reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
Texas Tech’s run ended in the Round of 32 against Alabama, and the Red Raiders finished 1-2 against SEC competition, beating LSU while falling to Arkansas and the Crimson Tide.
That makes Kentucky another useful SEC measuring stick.
For Texas Tech, the biggest question won’t be whether it wins the exhibition.
It’ll be whether the new pieces already look connected.
If Atwell, Williams, Bagayoko and the rest of the rebuilt roster can walk into Rupp and look comfortable, that’ll tell us plenty before November even arrives.
And for a team with postseason expectations, that’s exactly the kind of early test you want.
