Texas Tech is betting on Austin Romaine to help replace Jacob Rodriguez after landing one of college football’s top run-stopping linebackers.
Texas Tech football has big defensive expectations, and Austin Romaine may be the transfer portal piece that keeps the Red Raiders from taking a step back.
Replacing Jacob Rodriguez’s 2025 production won’t be simple.
It probably won’t be clean, either. Rodriguez was the kind of linebacker who could wreck a drive, clean up mistakes and give a defense an identity.
But Texas Tech didn’t sit around hoping someone would magically grow into that role.
The Red Raiders went shopping in the transfer portal and landed a serious answer.
Romaine arrives after a strong run at Kansas State, where he posted 66 tackles and seven tackles for loss last season.
That’s not just solid production. That’s a linebacker who already knows how to live around the football.
The numbers get even more interesting when you zoom out.
Over the past two seasons, Romaine has earned a 90.6 run-defense grade, ranking 11th among qualified linebackers nationally. His 79 run stops during that span lead all Power Four linebackers.
Texas Tech doesn’t need Romaine to become Rodriguez overnight. That’s not realistic.
But the Red Raiders do need him to bring a physical edge, diagnose quickly and keep opposing rushing attacks from controlling games.
Based on his track record, he’s built for exactly that job.
The fit matters because Texas Tech has bigger goals than simply being competitive. The Red Raiders have built a roster with enough talent to think seriously about a postseason push, and the defense has to carry its share of the load.
A linebacker who can erase run lanes and turn second-and-short into third-and-long changes the way a coordinator can call a game.
That’s why Romaine’s arrival is so important.
He gives Texas Tech a proven player in the middle of the defense, not just a projection.
He’s already produced against quality competition, already handled Power Four physicality and already shown he can be one of the better run defenders in college football.
If Romaine plays to that standard, Texas Tech’s defense can stay nasty even after losing a major piece in Rodriguez.
The Red Raiders don’t need hype right now. They need answers. Romaine looks like one of them.
