The rest of the country was celebrating Independence Day on Saturday. Meanwhile, Texas Tech and TCU created some fireworks of their own.
LUBBOCK -- While the United States was celebrating 250 years of independence on July 4th, two longtime rivals in the Lone Star State could not help but create some fireworks of their own.
In an X post on Saturday, TCU's official football account made reference to its 2014 meeting with Texas Tech, which saw the Horned Frogs put a historic thrashing on the Red Raiders.
"can't wait for everyone to shoot off fireworks tonight like it's October 25, 2014," the post read.
As previously mentioned, TCU went on to win that matchup by an astounding 82-27 score and set a Big 12 scoring record that stands to this day. But what does that have to do with fireworks, outside of the explosive plays from the Horned Frogs?
Being as the game was played inside Fort Worth's Amon G. Carter Stadium, TCU would set off fireworks after every score. Needless to say, 82 points is going to garner quite a bit of pyrotechnics, with some claims that the program actually ran out late in the affair.
Although it was a holiday, the post was not able to go undetected by the folks back in Lubbock, as Texas Tech issued a response through its football account.
"Rent free, even on Independence Day," wrote the Red Raiders while accompanying it with a picture of head coach Joey McGuire hoisting the Big 12 Championship trophy from this prior season.
It was a sharp and equally biting comeback from Texas Tech, with a potential deeper meaning than just showcasing their hardware from its most recent outing.

Focusing back on 2014, TCU was an absolute powerhouse in not only the Big 12 but the entire nation. The Horned Frogs boasted an 11-1 record and were in contention for the debut edition of the College Football Playoff.
However, that one defeat came at the hands of the Baylor Bears, who also went 11-1 on the year, which caused a split Big 12 title and possibly cost both teams a chance to make the postseason tournament.
Granted, there was no Big 12 Championship Game for the Horned Frogs to try and earn the trophy but the point stands that Texas Tech can brag their win, no matter how recent it may be.
Luckily for all those watching the Independence Day spat, Texas Tech and TCU will renew their rivalry this upcoming season. Ironically, it will fall on another holiday as the sport's lone Thanksgiving Day showdown from Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock.
It seems that no matter the circumstances, college football rivalries, especially in Texas, never take a holiday.
