Texas Tech picked up a win in the courtroom and seemingly ensured that standout guard Donovan Atwell will suit up for the Red Raiders this season for his fifth and final year after a judge granted his temporary injunction.
LUBBOCK -- Texas Tech earned another win the courtroom this year, as prospective men's basketball star Donovan Atwell was granted a temporary injunction on Thursday.
In a lengthy afternoon that bled into the evening inside a Lubbock County courtroom, District Judge John Grace ruled in favor of Atwell after hearing his arguments and those from the NCAA.
He clarified that this decision does not guarantee that Atwell will win the actual lawsuit, but prevents the NCAA from "enforcing its rules on age/year-based eligibility" in the meantime.
This latest decision comes after a long string of legal drama for the fifth-year guard and should be the final one needed to secure his spot on the Red Raiders' roster this season.
That notion is especially true after the official court date was set for June 14, 2027, despite the NCAA rallying for an expedited appeal.
While the organization could still pick up a win in that later court date, the college basketball season will long be over and Atwell will have nothing to stop him from suiting up in the meantime.
Due to that fact, most of these cases do not even make it to their final date, with the athletes pulling the lawsuit once the respective season comes to an end.
That is, of course, all speculation and getting back to what is for sure, Atwell is now eligible to play for Texas Tech once again and he provides Grant McCasland's squad some serious firepower.
Atwell spent only one season at Texas Tech but the hot-handed shooter smashed previous records held in Lubbock.
He drained 130 3-pointers to set the new single-season mark for a Red Raider from beyond the arc.
Beyond his lethal shooting, Atwell averaged nearly 14 points and 3 rebounds per game, emerging as one of the most potent offensive threats for Texas Tech and the Big 12.
With those already known skills, Atwell will look to transition into a new role for the Red Raiders.
As a fifth-year starter and entering his second year in Lubbock, Texas Tech will look to Atwell to be a leader for the younger members of the roster and mesh together with other big-name veterans, such as Darrion Williams and JT Toppin.
Texas Tech begins its season in front of its home crowd by welcoming Jackson State to United Supermarkets Arena on Monday, November 2 at 6 p.m.
It is a near certainty that Atwell will be right there on the court in that debut. If for some reason he does not, it will not be because he is unable to play this season after the huge win in the Lubbock courtroom.
