Texas Tech has switched its identity to crushing defense but one unlikely offensive piece could become the most pivotal part of another title run.

Texas Tech is riding high entering the latest campaign for the Red Raiders, as the reigning Big 12 Champions with a retooled roster are ready to add another trophy or two to the case.

One of those key pieces is someone who played a pivotal role in the triumphant run last year and looks to take the next step in a return to Lubbock.

Terrance Carter Jr. was a common target for Behren Morton and company, providing a reliable option outside of the various downfield threats lining up for the Red Raiders. And it paid off for the tight end, as he topped an impressive list ahead of the upcoming slate.

According to 247Sports, Carter is the nation's leading tight end when it comes to receiving yards and it is not even particularly close.

Carter comes into the season with a total of 1,570 yards, which is over 600 yards more than the second-ranked pass catcher.

It is not much of a stretch to say Carter has already left his mark with the Red Raiders based on these numbers, but this swan song gives him the chance to put the entire country on notice.

And it appears some have taken note, as Carter has been a staple on every preseason awards list or watch list that has included the Red Raiders, from All-Big 12 and beyond.

For a program that is now apparently known for defense, Carter represents a constant for Texas Tech and very well could become the team's top offensive powerhouse.

With Will Hammond taking on his first true QB1 responsibilities while coming off an injury, having a sure threat in Carter removes the stress from any high pressures situations the sophomore passer could find himself in.

It is not usual that the tight end is the primary pass catcher, but it also is not a usual feat for them to snag over 1,000 yards either.

Even if he does not finish the year atop the receiving yards standings for the Red Raiders, his influence will be evident outside of the simple numbers if Texas Tech goes on to have the year that is hoped for.

Not many teams have as high of expectations as Texas Tech heading into this looming season and the efforts of an unsung hero may be the sole reason they either come to fruition or fade into fantasy by the year's end.
