Tom Brady praised Danny Amendola during a Georgetown speech, but his Texas Tech joke gave Red Raiders fans a reason to fire back.
Tom Brady just found a new way to stir up Texas Tech fans, and he didn’t even need a football field to do it.
During a commencement speech at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, Brady used former New England Patriots teammate Danny Amendola as an example of toughness, loyalty and the value of having the right people around you.
Then he slipped in a joke that Red Raiders fans probably won’t be laughing off quietly.
Brady brought up Super Bowl LI, the Patriots’ legendary comeback against the Atlanta Falcons, and pointed to Amendola’s clutch 4th-and-3 catch as one of the plays that helped keep New England alive.
Amendola’s story is exactly the kind coaches love: undrafted out of Texas Tech, cut multiple times, not the biggest or fastest guy, but still trusted in the biggest moments.
Then came the jab.
Brady joked that sometimes you need “a kid from a glorified community college” to get you out of trouble.
Was it a shot at Texas Tech? Technically, yes. Was it probably just Brady needling a close friend? Also yes.
But good luck telling that to Lubbock.
Texas Tech fans are among the most fiercely loyal in college sports, and they don’t exactly let slights disappear into the West Texas wind. This is the same program that produced Amendola, Wes Welker, Zach Thomas, Michael Crabtree and, of course, Patrick Mahomes, one of the defining quarterbacks of this NFL era.
That’s what makes Brady’s joke so easy to flip. He can flash the rings, the resume and the Super Bowl stories, but Texas Tech can point to a proud NFL pipeline and a fan base that lives for bulletin-board material.
Brady’s line was playful. It wasn’t a declaration of war.
Still, if he ever shows up in Lubbock, he should expect a very loud, very sarcastic welcome.
