Will Hammond is expected back for Week 1, giving Texas Tech its dynamic quarterback in time for another serious run at the Big 12 championship.
The biggest question hanging over the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ 2026 season may have just disappeared.
Head coach Joey McGuire delivered the update Red Raiders fans have spent months waiting to hear: quarterback Will Hammond is expected to be ready for Week 1.
After an offseason filled with cautious timelines and vague optimism, Texas Tech can now prepare as though its most explosive quarterback will be available from the opening snap.
That changes everything in Lubbock.
Hammond suffered a torn ACL last season, creating uncertainty about whether he’d miss a significant portion of the 2026 schedule.
Early projections pointed toward a possible return around Week 3. McGuire later suggested Hammond could potentially beat that timetable.
Now, the coach isn’t hedging.
Hammond’s expected availability gives Texas Tech a chance to establish its offense before the Big 12 race gets serious.
The Red Raiders open against Abilene Christian before facing Oregon State, offering Hammond two valuable opportunities to regain his timing, confidence and mobility before the conference opener against Houston.
Those games shouldn’t be treated as meaningless tuneups. They’re Hammond’s runway.
The young quarterback has already shown why Texas Tech views him as a centerpiece. In limited action, Hammond produced nearly 680 passing yards and seven touchdowns while adding 299 rushing yards.
His ability to extend plays and punish defenses with his legs gives McGuire’s offense an element that’s difficult to prepare for.
Talent was never the concern. The knee was.
Texas Tech’s outlook became even murkier when Brendan Sorsby was removed from the quarterback picture.
Without Hammond, the Red Raiders faced the possibility of entering a title defense with major uncertainty at the sport’s most important position.
Instead, McGuire may have his QB1 back immediately.
There will still be questions. Hammond must prove he can trust the repaired knee, absorb contact and maintain his explosiveness over a full season.
Returning from an ACL tear isn’t as simple as receiving medical clearance.
But Texas Tech doesn’t need Hammond to be Superman in September. It needs him healthy, decisive and steadily improving.
If he reaches his full stride by the heart of Big 12 play, the Red Raiders won’t merely have a chance to defend their conference championship.
They may have the quarterback capable of taking them somewhere even bigger.
