The Red Raiders welcomed their highly-touted recruit to campus this week.
Defensive end LaDamion Guyton was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class before reclassifying up to 2026.
His commitment to the Texas Tech Red Raiders officially became a reality this week as Guyton arrived on campus and began practicing at fall camp. He previously dealt with difficulties in his NCAA eligibility after reclassifying, but those have now passed.
"He definitely looks the part," head coach Joey McGuire said at media availability Thursday in Lubbock.
Guyton participated in conditioning drills during the second half of Wednesday's first camp workout. He then took part in half of Thursday's practice to, as McGuire said, "make sure he's in great shape, which he is."
"He had a couple really good reps today," the coach said. "It's good to get him on campus."
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Guyton was teammates with another Tech freshman, quarterback Stephen Cannon, and appeared in the 4A state championship game last season as a junior at Benedictine Military School.
Guyton ended his final prep season with 76 tackles, 15.0 of which were for loss behind the line of scrimmage, and 7.0 sacks. The 6-3, 250-pounder was rated a 5-star prospect by all major recruiting outlets. Rivals ranked Guyton as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 class, while 247Sports ranked him No. 4 and ESPN had him at No. 5 before his reclassification.
Guyton was already committed to the Red Raiders before jumping to the 2026 class.
Now, the next No. 1-ranked 2027 recruit, defensive tackle Jalen Brewster, is also verbally committed to Texas Tech.
Brewster shared the post above from Tech's football account on social media as a nod to his potential teammate along the defensive line next season.
The two already have familiarity, as they took part in the Under Armour All-American game together this past winter.
Brewster's status is still clouded with some uncertainty as the prospect receives interest from Florida and LSU, among others, before signing day. However, a shoutout like this suggests Brewster's firm commitment to the Red Raiders and his connection with Guyton.
Before forming a potentially dominant duo, Guyton will get his Texas Tech career underway as a rotational edge rusher next to top veteran transfers Adam Trick and Trey White.
"The depth on this team ... I can't remember a team like this as far as the depth," McGuire said about potential position battles at camp.
McGuire, however, explained that he always plays a lot of players on the defensive side, likely giving Guyton plenty of opportunities to see the field and produce as a freshman.
