The Green Wave and Tigers will meet in a massive American Conference matchup.
One of the biggest games on the Tulane Green Wave's calendar is here: a rivalry matchup with the Memphis Tigers.
There's plenty on the line for both teams. Tulane needs a big, season-defining win to find some momentum and win back the fanbase. Memphis is a favorite to win the American Conference, and a loss this early in league play could derail some of those hopes. On top of this, it's always a fun, somewhat chaotic game, even to the average bystander.
Here are the keys to success for the Green Wave ahead of the Friday night showdown.
Find some sort of success at quarterback.
At this point, there has to be some sort of answer for the Green Wave at the quarterback position.
Kadin Semonza has earned the start in the past four games, but he's struggled. While drops by receivers haven't been his fault, he's still been inaccurate and out-of-sync with his wideouts far too often. He might be the most "stable" pick, but he hasn't done much to make a difference, and he's not irreplacable.
There's a chance that true freshman Trace Johnson gets the chance to play, and even as a rookie, he's pretty talented. Or, perhaps Zeon Chriss-Gremillion will somehow get another chance after being benched in the season opener.
At this point, it doesn't matter who gets to be the signal-caller... somebody just has to step up and play well.
Play a complete game on defense.
Tulane's defense is below average at best, and its rushing defense is easily one of the worst in the nation. Despite this, the Green Wave had some solid outings against the Army Black Knights last weekend.
It wasn't perfect, and the team wasn't able to carry its success through the fourth quarter, but there are undoubtedly some dogs in that group. If Tulane can keep drives short and make a few big plays in the backfield and secondary, then there's a very real chance that this team could pull off a massive upset.
It's going to take a lot of heart and effort to contain the Tigers, but it's possible that the Green Wave finally does it -- even though Memphis' offense has been downright impressive this year.
Unleash Jamauri McClure.
After suffering a preseason foot injury, McClure finally returned to action against Army.
The running back totaled five carries for 25 yards, splitting reps most heavily with Johnnie Daniels and DJ Dugar Jr. Though he didn't have a big night, it was a small step towards getting back to the player he was late last year. Now that he's made his return to in-game action, it's time to unleash him.
McClure is fast and powerful, becoming one of the most highly-touted rushers in the American ahead of the season. He brings so much to the table, and he can be one of the biggest difference-makers for the Green Wave; even though the program has a plethora of strong rushers, none play quite like McClure does.
The redshirt sophomore should be ready to go at full power by now, and there's no reason to limit him. Let McClure show Memphis what he's all about.
