The Green Wave fell to the Black Knights on a last-second field goal.
After another disappointing weekend for the Tulane Green Wave, the team will be looking to pick up the pieces.
Tulane dropped a 20-17 contest to the Army Black Knights on Saturday, falling to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in the American Conference. Though there were a few bright spots in the contest, the product on the field was not up to the Green Wave standard.
The Good
Tulane's defense was better than it has been in weeks, with the secondary being especially strong. That's not to say that it was great, but there was some notable improvement.
The Green Wave gave up just 19 passing yards on the day and allowed only seven points through the first three quarters of action. The team even limited Army on the ground up until the start of the fourth quarter, when it gave up 150 rushing yards and 13 points in the final 15 minutes. At that point, the group was pretty worn down... not that that's an excuse. Regardless, the unit played with more fire and intensity than it has all year.
In other good news, running back Jamauri McClure made his much-anticipated return. It was a quiet day for the standout rusher, as he had just five carries for 25 yards, but it was nice to see him back on the field.
The Bad
On the other side of the ball, Tulane just couldn't find any consistency.
The offense was rough, with running backs finding the most success -- as has been the case every week -- and quarterback Kadin Semonza and his wideouts falling behind. There were numerous drops, a handful of miscommunications and some all-out bad throws. Every time the offense would get the slightest bit of momentum, some sort of costly error was made.
With Tulane's passing game being nearly nonexistent, it puts that much more pressure on rushers. Sure, the program has a strong, diverse running backs room... but they can't do everything, especially when opposing defenses know that the team is going to rely on the run more often than not.
The fact that the offense looked as poor as it did after a bye week is concerning. If anything, there should've been improvement in some area, but it seems like the group has made no progress this year.
The Uncertain
Is Tulane really being set up for success?
Some players aren't executing like they should, but play-calling has been questionable at times. For example, head coach Will Hall elected to go for it on 4th-and-8 from the Army 33-yard line late in the game, which ultimately sealed the team's fate when it turned the ball over on downs and gave the home squad all of the momentum.
It seems like the same plays are being run over and over again with little success. If that's the case, how does anyone expect anything to change? When things simply aren't working, it's time to try something new, and if that doesn't happen... there are much bigger problems to address.
