The Green Wave's matchup with the Memphis Tigers is growing in notoriety in the world of college football.
The Tulane Green Wave and Memphis Tigers might already be considered rivals among college football fans -- especially in recent years -- but the matchup is picking up some steam elsewhere.
EA Sports College Football 27 has officially dubbed the matchup between the Green Wave and the Tigers as a "rivalry game," adding a bit of extra excitement to the popular game for passionate fans of the Olive Green and Sky Blue. Though there has been some frustration towards the game's developers due to their use of microtransactions, which have since been removed, this rivalry designation was a nice step in recognizing a matchup that has quickly become one of the biggest in the Group of Five.
There's good reason for the programs to have some animosity towards each other. Both Tulane and Memphis are routinely considered to be among the best teams in the American Conference and are routinely considered "favorites" for the G5's automatic bid in the College Football Playoff. The matchup typically falls in late October or early November -- a critical time in the postseason race. The rivalry has started to extend beyond the gridiron as well, with the schools' men's basketball programs notably playing some intense matchups during the 2025-2026 season.
As The Uptown Update pointed out on X, there's one key thing that this rivalry is missing: a name. The Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide have the Iron Bowl, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels play in the Battle for the Golden Egg, or simply called the Egg Bowl. When the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes meet up, it's simply called The Game.
With that being said, what should the growing Tulane-Memphis rivalry be called? Here are a few suggestions.
Mayhem on the Mighty Mississippi
The most obvious choice for a rivalry name revolves around the Mississippi River, which is an integral part of both city's landscape. "Mayhem" seems like the perfect word to describe what happens when these teams meet up.
Riverboat Classic
Another take on the river-themed concept. This one is a bit shorter and recognizes something unique about the lower half of the Mississippi River: riverboats!
Beale-Bourbon Bowl
This name flows, and it recognizes two iconic streets in both cities. Both streets are known for a bit of chaos and debauchery, so proceed with caution when using this name... and maybe tell ESPN to not do live promotional videos on either street.
Football's Food Fight
One last name suggestion recognizes the fact that both cities have acclaimed cuisine, with Memphis boasting barbecue and New Orleans serving up Cajun and Creole dishes. In all honesty, one city definitely has the better food, so this name isn't entirely fair to both sides.
