The Green Wave had one of their strongest weekends of the season so far, taking down the Shockers on the road.
The Tulane Green Wave baseball team bounced back in a big way on the diamond over the weekend, claiming a series victory over the Wichita State Shockers.
The Sluggerbirds won the first game by a score of 4-2, before dropping Friday's second game 7-4. They'd go on to win the rubber match in dominant fashion, with an 8-1 win that was never truly close.
Most things went right for Tulane on the weekend, but can that momentum carry on as American Conference play continues? Here's a look at the good, the bad and the uncertain from the team's weekend in Kansas.
The Good: The Green Wave's pitching staff had a mostly-clean weekend.
It's no secret that some of the Sluggerbirds' biggest problems this year have come on the mound, but things took a bit of a turn in the right direction against Wichita State.
While giving up 26 hits in three games isn't overly impressive, the fact that the visiting squad held the Shockers to 10 runs through those three games is. What's even more impressive is the fact that the Green Wave greatly limited self-inflicted mistakes.
Tulane struck out 17 batters on the weekend while giving up just four walks and hitting two batters. All of those walks came in Friday's loss, and the two hit batters were recorded on Saturday but didn't cause too much of a problem for the Green Wave. The pitching staff, for the most part, was effective and sharp -- that could carry this team far.
The Bad: The team might need to adjust its weekend rotation a bit.
Yes, the pitching performance can be labeled both good and bad for the Green Wave. Once again, for the most part, the pitching staff was effective and sharp, but a glaring issue has arisen in the team's starting rotation.
Trey Cehajic has struggled much more than usual lately. Though he had a strong start to the year, he hasn't found much success on the mound since picking up the win against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels back on February 27th. The team has taken five Friday-night losses since then, with three being credited to Cehajic.
While the graduate student wasn't technically tabbed with the team's Friday loss against Wichita State, he had his fair share of issues at the plate. Cehajic gave up four earned runs on seven hits across 3.1 innings pitched, all while striking out one batter and walking another.
At this point, it might be time to consider adjusting his role a bit. It's obvious that Cehajic is currently having a tough time on the mound, and it might serve him well to come out of the bullpen or move to midweek outings for a little while. Additionally, the Green Wave certainly needs to start grabbing some more victories, and Cehajic hasn't been able to do that.
The Uncertain: How far can Tulane's offense carry this team?
The Sluggerbirds have started to separate a bit offensively, with the top threats making a name for themselves. At the same time, some players with high expectations heading into the season are in a slump.
Slumps are a normal occurrence in baseball: players get hot at the dish for a while, and then cool off. However, athletes have to find a way to break out of them at some point.
There's no doubt that Tulane has some star power at the plate, but it hasn't always been easy for the team to string together quality at-bats. If the program finds a way to get in a groove and see more contributions from the entire lineup, then opponents better watch out.
