It's hard to ask for a better start in American Conference play than the one the Tulane Green Wave is having.
Tulane continued its hot streak with a dominant 85-52 win over the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday, improving to 12-4 on the year and 3-0 in conference play. There was never much of a doubt in the game, as the Green Wave rolled to a 39-21 lead by halftime and still kept a steady pace through the rest of the contest by outscoring UTSA 46-31 in the second half. With the victory, the team now sits in second place in the conference standings.
It was a record-setting day all around for the visiting squad. Tulane knocked down a program-record 19 three pointers and recorded the largest road victory against an American Conference opponent since the team joined the conference ahead of the 2014 season. Additionally, the Green Wave's perfect conference record to start the season is its best since the 1996-97 season in which Perry Clark served as head coach.
Rowan Brumbaugh led all scorers with 23 total points, including six made three-pointers. The preseason American Conference Player of the Year also dished out a team-high five assists and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Curtis Williams Jr. had one of his best days of the season with his dominant double-digit showing, scoring 22 points with six three-pointers of his own. The junior added two rebounds and four assists as well.
Believe it or not, only one other player scored in double figures for Tulane... but it's not much of a surprise that Asher Woods was the student-athlete that rose to the occasion. The preseason Second-Team All-Conference standout had 17 points, three assists and a team-best seven boards on the afternoon.
Scotty Middleton and Tyler Ringgold rounded out a solid day from the starting rotation with 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists combined.
Several bench players were able to make key offensive contributions to the victory as well. KJ Greene added three points, and JoJo Moore had two of his own. In an unforgettable moment, redshirt junior Jake Shapiro entered the game and knocked down a three-pointer of his own to cap off the game.
As impressive as the Green Wave's offense was, the defense truly rose to a new level. The Roadrunners were held to a 34.0-percent shooting percentage, including 23.8-percent from three-point range. Tulane recorded 12 steals on the day and out-rebounded the home team 37 to 33.
Up next, the Green Wave will welcome a scrappy UAB Blazers team to Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14th, in Uptown.
