Tulane Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Stun Temple Owls 77-66 cover image

The Green Wave put together a 20-4 run in the second frame while shooting nearly 69-percent from the field to shock one of the American Conference's top teams.

The Tulane Green Wave picked up arguably its biggest victory on the hardwood of the season on Wednesday night, taking down the Temple Owls 77-66 to get back in the win column.

Heading into the matchup, the Owls were one of the top teams in the American Conference and had won four of their previous five games. Rather than be daunted by the challenge, the Green Wave rose to the occasion in the biggest way.

Tulane and Temple kept pace with each other throughout the first half, ultimately heading into the locker room tied at 30 points apiece. Whatever halftime speech head coach Ron Hunter gave the team must've made an impact, because the Green Wave rolled right over the Owls in the second half.

The home team caught fire, putting together a 20-4 run that ultimately ended in a 17-point lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game. Despite some late comeback attempts by Temple, Tulane was able to hold strong and seal its fate at the free throw line, knocking off a league-frontrunner in shocking fashion.

Tyler Ringgold led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, while Asher Woods was not far behind with 19 points of his own. Rowan Brumbaugh added 11 points, six rebounds and a team-best seven assists on the night; he's now just 16 points away from recording 1,000 points in his Green Wave career. Curtis Williams Jr. was the fourth player to score in double figures for the team, with 10 points a team-high eight boards. Luke Rasmussen rounded out the starting lineup with two points, two assists and six rebounds. Additionally, the team had a combined 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in limited action from bench players.

Somehow, Tulane managed to improve in quite a few areas in which it has struggled for the last month or so. The team shot at a 51.2-percent clip from the field, including an outstanding 68.4-percent in the second half alone. 30 of the Green Wave's points came in the paint, and the team dished out 16 total assists to the Owls' nine.

Tulane crashed the boards with much more success than it has so far this year, with 35 total rebounds on the night. It also posted seven blocks, with five different players contributing; that marks the fifth time this season that the team has had at least seven blocks in a single game.

Ultimately, every student-athlete who touched the court found a way to contribute to the victory -- whether by scoring the brunt of the Green Wave's points or playing lockdown defense. The team's talent was certainly on display.

Now, Tulane will look to carry the momentum from this massive win through the final few weeks of the season. That all starts on Sunday, February 15th, as the team travels to take on the UAB Blazers. It's a rematch of a mid-January matchup that the Green Wave dropped by a score of 82-69. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
