The Tulane Green Wave have a potent red zone defense among several strengths on this team.
Individual stats don’t make up a football team, but they certainly tell a lot of the story for the Tulane Green Wave.
For one, free safety Kevin Adams leads college football entirely in solo tackles. He has 53 through eight games played this season. He recorded eight alone against the Charlotte 49ers in Friday night’s win.
He also leads the conference in solo tackles per game with 6.83. He’s also fifth in total tackles per contest, averaging nine a game.
Entering Week 10 of action, the Green Wave lead the American Conference in several metrics.
They lead in fourth down conversions (23.1 percent), blocked kicks (3), and red zone defense (69.4 percent). That red zone defense is also fourth in the nation. There is no denying what this Tulane defense can do once they have to lock in and keep an opponent from reaching the end zone.
They’ve allowed 20 touchdowns on 35 attempts and five field goals. Then there’s the three blocks that deserve their own flowers.
They are complete game changers, as seen by the game-alerting field goal block at Charlotte.
Kicker Cooper Helmke leads the conference in field goal percentage with an 83.3 percent mark on the year since taking over as starting kicker.
Punter William Hudlow leads the American with a 47-yard punting average.
Linebacker Dickson Agu is atop the conference with an average of 9.8 total tackles per game.
In the league, they are second in defensive touchdowns (2) and net punting (43.82).
Both safety Kevin Adams and cornerback Anthony Rogers are tied for second in the conference with two interceptions a piece, with Rogers returning one of those for a touchdown.
TJ Smith is third in the American in combined kick return yardage with 300 total.
To round things out, running back Johnnie Daniels is seventh with six rushing touchdowns on the year.
Those are solid numbers to take away from the first eight weeks of action for the Green Wave.
They also note the emergence of strengths in several areas.
Red zone defense is undeniable, and that will really matter as the Wave settle into the final weeks of play.
Just look how they made their overtime stand in the end zone against the 49ers to seal the win for the Wave.
Special teams has become a real potent weapon.
Tacklers are outkicking their coverage in what they can cover and do like Adams at safety.
If these things can keep coming together in the final weeks, Tulane has a real chance to make a grand final stand.
