The No. 20 Tulane Green Wave remain in the driver’s seat for the College Football Playoff with the highest Group of Five ranking in Week 14. After debuting on the list at No. 24 two weeks ago, the Green Wave have continued to win and will host Friday’s American Conference Championship against the North Texas Mean Green.
They are not the only Group of Five team ranked this time, but they remain the highest one, which is frankly all that matters for their season goals. But the Mean Green and Dukes found their way into the top 25 this week.
It’s simple: a win on Friday is for the College Football Playoff -- and potentially a higher seeding.
Here's a look at the complete Week 14 rankings.
Unlike last week, due to the chaos of the Duke Blue Devils -- who the Green Wave have beat -- landing in the ACC title game, the committee deliberately did not project the No. 11 and No. 12 seeds. Should the Blue Devils win, the American champ could very likely snag the No. 11 seed. That would place Tulane, ironically, in a rematch with Ole Miss currently, or at Oregon as the No. 12 seed.
Now, the committee made things a bit interesting with the inclusion of other G5 teams this time, but with none ranking higher than Tulane, it just doesn’t matter what those two teams do -- one of them being their conference championship opponent. It’s clear the committee isn’t dinging any of these teams for losing their coaches, as the only three in contention for that spot – the Green Wave, Mean Green, and Dukes – have all lost theirs. It’s an equalizer.
Everything is in front of Tulane and they control their destiny with a win in the American Conference Championship. It’s a play-in game for the biggest stage in college football.
