Tulane seizes top Group of Five spot in CFP rankings. Can they defy history and maintain their historic playoff bid?

The Tulane Green Wave officially control their destiny as the top ranked Group of Five team in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday.

After coming in No. 24 in the AP Top 25 behind the James Madison Dukes and North Texas Mean Green, the Green Wave were the only Group of Five team to land in the CFP rankings coming in at No. 24. Here is the full list of rankings:

    1. Ohio State Bulldogs

    2. Indiana Hoosiers

    3. Texas A&M Aggies

    4. Georgia Bulldogs

    5. Texas Tech Red Raiders

    6. Ole Miss Rebels

    7. Oregon Ducks

    8. Oklahoma Sooners

    9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

    10. Alabama Crimson Tide

    11. BYU Cougars

    12. Utah Utes

    13. Miami Hurricanes

    14. Vanderbilt Commodores

    15. USC Trojans

    16. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

    17. Texas Longhorns

    18. Michigan Wolverines

    19. Virginia Cavaliers

    20. Tennessee Volunteers

    21. Illinois Fighting Illini

    22. Mizzou Tigers

    23. Houston Cougars

    24. Tulane Green Wave

    25. Arizona State Sun Devils

As the top ranked, and only, G5 representative, Tulane now controls its destiny just weeks after a 48-26 loss to the UTSA Roadrunners. Their 38-32 road win over the Memphis Tigers changed everything for the Green Wave.

Often, football is a bit of opportunity and luck, and Tulane was the beneficiary of both this weekend, beating the FAU Owls 35-24 while other teams in the American lost crucial contests.

The No. 22 USF Bulls lost to the Navy Midshipmen and fell out of favor for title contention, leaving the lane for the G5 representative wide open. The question was whether the committee would favor strength of schedule, point margins in victories, a perfect conference record, or real competition that teams beat.

Unlike the North Texas Mean Green and JMU Dukes, the Green Wave had two Power Four wins over the Northwestern Wildcats and Duke Blue Devils, and a ranked win over the Tigers. The Roadrunners loss stung, as did the loss to the now No. 6 Rebels. But when the chips were down, Tulane won when they needed to, and continued to do so while other conference foes faltered.

Now the challenge is this weekend, where they play a well-coached and disciplined Temple Owls team. Every conference team that has been ranked in the AP Top 25 and CFP rankings has lost their next contest. Will the Green Wave follow suit? Or will they be able to tune out the loudest noise in program history?
