The Tulane Green Wave got the job done and walked out of Yulman Stadium with a 26-19 win over the East Carolina Pirates on Thursday night... but it was far from a good feeling.

Head Coach Jon Sumrall voiced his obvious frustrations following the matchup in a postgame interview with ESPN, mincing few words when talking about his team's performance.

"We're a really sloppy football team that finds ways to win games, and I'm going to lose my mind because we're so immature," Sumrall said hoarsely in an on-field interview following the matchup. "We've got to grow up fast. I'm glad we won, I'm not happy with how we played."

Tulane took a 12-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, but it was all thanks to the work of Patrick Durkin. The kicker drilled four field goals -- one in the first quarter and three in the second -- after promising offensive drives were thwarted time and time again.

Let's just say that the Pirates came out of the locker room with a whole new perspective. The team scored the first touchdown of the game roughly three minutes into the half to cut the deficit to 12-7, then added nine more points on a touchdown with a failed two-point conversion and a field goal.

Just like that, the Green Wave found themselves in a 16-12 hole to start the fourth quarter. The program brought some life back into a stunned Yulman Stadium with a 63-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Retzlaff to Zycarl Lewis Jr. to make it a 19-16 game. A field goal by East Carolina tied it, but Retzlaff had a bit of late-game magic in him.

The dual-threat quarterback utilized his arm in crunch time and connected with freshman running back Javin Gordon on a short, four-yard touchdown pass with just 35 seconds left in the game. It was,  by all accounts, a miracle to prevent what could've been called the Upset in Uptown.

While Tulane's offense saved an otherwise mediocre performance with a solid fourth quarter, its defense left much to be desired. The Green Wave allowed the Pirates to convert 10-of-19 third downs and struggled greatly with stopping an East Carolina rushing attack that totaled 160 yards on the night.

Additionally, Tulane played an incredibly undisciplined game, with 11 penalties for 96 yards. Maybe the bye week wasn't such a good thing?

It's safe to say that Sumrall was pretty accurate in his assessment of the team following the game -- his players really had no business winning the game in the end, but somehow did. There's still much to clean up if the Green Wave hope to have a shot at the American Conference championship or an appearance in the College Football Playoff.
