The Tulane quarterbacks haven't been able to stack days or separate, and hopefully that changes with some sustained drives in Saturday's scrimmage.

New Orleans, La. – Not every day is going to be perfect in fall camp, and head coach Will Hall felt that Day 7 of camp was one of the more disappointing sessions for the Tulane Green Wave quarterbacks.

The day started off a big sluggish and that maybe that translated into a tone set that the competing signal callers couldn’t shake off, but it led to Hall kicking off his post practice remarks on a more critical note.

“For the first time all camp, I felt like our quarterback's eyes were not good early,” Hall said. “I though that's the worst pass skill session we've had offensively.”

To that point, Hall did think that they responded well to hearing about their play from both him and quarterbacks coach Collin D’Angelo.

But Hall has made it a point to mention the quarterbacks’ eyes all through fall camp as the most important trait he’s looking for out of that group.

It’s been a hard group to assess, and that’s not a cop-out answer.

When four guys are getting equal reps, and only four or so at a time at that, it makes it really hard to judge who’s really grabbing an edge in the race.

It’s also difficult when not each rep is worth the same. It’s a lot more valuable to see how these guys are playing with the ones and against the ones on defense, and that’s been a bit jumbled up.

It makes Saturday’s scrimmage a really important one – certainly team wide – but especially for Kadin Semonza, Zeon Chriss-Gremillion, Trace Johnson, and Dagan Bruno.

They won’t be live, with Hall noting that he only makes his quarterbacks live during spring camp.

But it should allow for a better glimpse at how the quarterbacks can really handle a drive, get into a rhythm, and handle some adversity.

At this point, it’s a race that’s wide open, with no competitors really separating themselves significantly enough.

One hopes that at least one takes that step forward Saturday, or unfortunately, that one takes enough of one backwards to trim down the competitors a bit in this battle.

There’s still weeks to go until the season opener, and whoever wins the job, everyone on the offense will have had more time on task with them than anyone did with Jake Retzlaff last season.

But there’s certainly no one stepping into the void and grabbing it for the taking just yet.

Maybe that says something about the Green Wave’s other side of the ball on defense just as much, but it’s a race that was still stalled as of Thurday.
