Tulane Women’s Basketball Star Earns American Freshman of the Week cover image

The Tulane Green Wave freshman secured her third American Freshman of the Week honor.

It’s been an exciting season for Tulane Green Wave women’s basketball star Mecailin Marshall, who has had a sensational season for the team. She recently secured her third American Freshman of the Week honor this season as part of the conference’s weekly women’s basketball honorees. The award recognized her play for games on Feb. 9-15. The team is currently 8-16 and 3-9 in conference play, and unfortunately, went 0-2 in conference games against the East Carolina Pirates and North Texas Mean Green during that stretch. The team lost 61-65 to the Pirates on Feb. 10 and 47-56 to the Mean Green on Feb. 14. However, Marshall was sensational in the slate.

She averaged 19.5 points per game in the pair of contests, and her scoring tied for fifth in the American conference through that week of play. She had a career-high 34 points against East Carolina, which is the highest point total in a single game by a Green Wave freshman since at least the 1999 season. It was also the highest point total off the bench this century. The 34 points are the sixth most by a freshman in a game across the nation through this women’s college basketball season, and the highest points scored by an American Conference freshman all year. Marshall scored over half of Tulane’s field goals against the Pirates, securing 11 of 20 buckets. In addition, she had four three-pointers and was 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Through the two-game slate, Marshall was 10-of-11 from the field goal line, which is a 90.9 percentage – the highest free throw percentage for a player in the American that week who had at least 10 attempts. She shot 42.9 percent from the field and 33.3 on three pointers through the week of play.

So, while the team is still fighting to regain some dominance coming off a six-game losing streak, the Green Wave can feel confident in their rookie star who put up more than half of the team’s point total in the loss to ECU. They will look to get right on the road Tuesday evening for the first of back-to-back matches against the Memphis Tigers. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. in Memphis, and the teams will head back to New Orleans for a rematch on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The game Tuesday night is a rescheduled make-up game for the postponed contest on Jan. 27 due to weather. Both games will stream on ESPN+ and on local radio on WRBH 88.3 FM and through the Varsity Network App.
