The Green Wave is looking for its first American Conference win of the year as it welcomes the Tigers to New Orleans.
Five games into the season, the Tulane Green Wave offense still seems just as stuck as it was to begin the year.
The Green Wave has been flat offensively, outside of a few standout running back performances. Quarterback play has been below-average at best, and few wideouts have made any impact at all. As if skill players haven't been struggling enough, Tulane's offensive line has hit some low points as well -- though that group could be improving somewhat.
The Olive Green and Sky Blue is averaging 17.8 points per game, only scoring a season-high of 28 points against the South Alabama Jaguars in Week Two. Meanwhile, the program hasn't exactly been able to win a defensive battle, either. Tulane is going to need to figure out some sort of way to extend drives and find the end zone every once in a while, especially on Friday against a Memphis Tigers squad that has looked better with each passing week.
Who will rise to the occasion and make some noise against Memphis? Here are three offensive players to watch in the matchup.
RB Johnnie Daniels
In the past three games, Daniels has quietly put together some of the best rushing stats for the Green Wave.
The running back added 59 yards on 10 carries against the Kansas State Wildcats before recording a season-high 19 carries for 70 yards in the team's win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. In Tulane's most recent matchup against the Army Black Knights, Daniels added 67 yards on eight carries.
Though he's been tough and consistent, his only two touchdowns came against South Alabama. Expect Daniels to keep making a name for himself on the field and potentially find his way to the end zone on Friday night.
WR Destyn Hill
In a struggling wide receivers room, Hill has been the best, most consistent downfield threat.
He was quiet in the third and fourth games of the season, but Hill bounced back against Army with five catches for 54 yards, including a 17-yard reception. Like Daniels, the wideout hasn't scored much, but aside from an opening-game fumble against the Duke Blue Devils, he hasn't made near as many mistakes as some of his counterparts.
Hill should remain WR1 for Tulane heading deeper into conference play -- regardless of who is throwing him the ball.
QB ?
The question mark is not a mistake.
At this point, who will suit up and take the starter spot for the Green Wave on Friday? Kadin Semonza has seen the most action by far, but he's been unimpressive in every game. Zeon Chriss-Gremillion made the first start of the year, but he hasn't touched the field since being benched in Week One. Trace Johnson has the arm talent to make a difference, but he's only a freshman. There's no telling who Will Hall calls on this week.
No matter who suits up, it is vitally important that he puts together a strong performance. The Green Wave simply can't have a revolving door at the quarterback position.
