The Knights dismantled the Wildcats in a record-breaking season opener, fueled by Duke Watson’s explosive runs and a relentless offense that matched a program-high 73 points.
Rocco Marriott snuck into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown to tie a UCF school record for the most points scored in a single game (73).
It was his first career touchdown in his college debut.
The Knights dominated the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in their season-opener at the Acrisure Bounce House on Thursday night. A 73-6 victory set a new program record for the largest margin of victory (67 points).
It's the second time the team has scored 73 points in the last decade. The first time they achieved this feat came during the 2017 undefeated season against Austin Peay on Oct. 28.
UCF started the first quarter on fire.
Running back Duke Watson burst through an open gap, seeing nothing but green grass on a 64-yard touchdown run. It became the second-longest run of his career, behind a 68-yard run against Stanford on Nov. 16, 2024.
The defense joined the party for the second score of the quarter. Defensive back Jayden Williams intercepted Bethune-Cookman quarterback Tyler Jefferson on their first play of the drive and returned it 47 yards for a pick-six.
He got blocking support, navigating the open gaps before diving for the touchdown.
UCF had all the momentum, forcing an early punt and getting its star quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, back on the field. Barnett led an 11-play, 85-yard drive en route to his first touchdown in the Black and Gold.
Coach Scott Frost called a read option in the red zone for Barnett, and he kept the ball, waltzing in for a five-yard touchdown run.
The star quarterback continued to run the show in the second quarter, extending his team's unanswered scoring streak. He completed a 23-yard touchdown pass over the middle to wide receiver Jonathan Bibbs.
Barnett had an impressive debut, completing 11-for-18 passes for 158 yards, but ended his night with an interception. He overthrew his intended receiver, and defensive back Jaden Davis picked off Barnett.
"Nobody hated that pick more than me, especially offense rolling like that," Barnett said during the post-game press conference. "Just can't have things like that."
The Knights' avalanche continues until the end of the game. Keyone Jenkins, the backup quarterback, threw a touchdown. Agyeman Addae, Landen Chambers, Taevion Swint and Rocco Marriott combined for five rushing touchdowns; Caleb Rollerson had the second receiving touchdown of the night.
The offense looked explosive, as advertised by the team throughout the offseason.
Bethune-Cookman scored in the final seconds to prevent a historic shutout.
Thursday's season opener was a statement victory, and one the team can build on before facing the Pittsburgh Panthers next week. The Week 2 matchup is regarded as one of the toughest matchups for UCF.
"We passed this test," Frost said during the post-game press conference. "We're going to have a harder one in a week. We're going to have 12 chances to earn some respect. I think our players are looking forward to those opportunities."
