A sea of fans stormed the turf after Grayson Brousseau’s dramatic touchdown capped a double-overtime thriller, securing the highest-ranked win in Knights history and rattling the rankings.
Students stormed the field at Acrisure Bounce House after the UCF Knights made program history, dethroning the No. 2 BYU Cougars 39-31 on Saturday.
UCF's upset in its double-overtime thriller is the highest-ranked win in school history. Its previous highest-ranked win dates back to 2013, when former Knights quarterback Blake Bortles threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-42 win against the No. 6 Baylor Bears.
The final minute of the fourth quarter was nerve-wracking. Referees called a mandatory 10-second run-off after BYU blocked Will Stone's potential game-winning field goal, and his helmet came off after recovering the kick.
Both quarterbacks, Keyone Jenkins and Bear Bachmeier, made stellar plays in the first overtime period. Jenkins found Josh Derry and Bachmeier found Legend Glasker to send the game into double overtime.
A roughing-the-kicker penalty from BYU gave UCF a second lifeline after forcing a fourth-and-goal. Tight end Grayson Brousseau, a Utah native, caught the game-winning touchdown against a powerhouse program from his home state.
Jenkins found freshman wide receiver Tyren Hornes for the two-point conversion. Hornes broke out with a career-high 137 yards on six catches, making multiple game-changing plays.
Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch's group stood strong at the goal line. Demari Henderson went down with an injury, and Ty Bartrum filled in for the final plays.
The Cougars tried targeting Bartrum, but he broke up Bachmeier's pass on third-and-goal. UCF forced a turnover on downs to dethrone the No. 2 team in the country and give coach Scott Frost his first ranked win since returning to Orlando.
Frost overcame the late-game second-half collapses that plagued the last two losses. His squad lost the second half 10-7, but a 17-point second quarter built a cushion for the final minutes.
Running back Landen Chambers stepped up in Taevion Swint's absence, as Swint was ruled out with an undisclosed injury.
Chambers rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to start the second quarter and caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins before halftime. UCF entered the break with a 17-14 lead, flipping the halftime score from last season's matchup against BYU.
Jenkins led the Knights in their toughest game of the season. He finished with a season-high 293 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, though he came close to throwing a few.
UCF picked up a much-needed upset to relieve late-season pressure to win. Frost is two wins away from snapping a two-year bowl drought.
The Knights will ride their home momentum as they host the Bears at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN next Friday at Acrisure Bounce House.
