
Led by McKenzie Milton’s explosive playmaking, the undefeated Knights averaged 48.2 points per game, outstripping traditional powerhouses to cement their legacy as a modern offensive juggernaut.
The 2017 UCF Knights put together a historic offensive season, cementing themselves as one of the highest scoring programs since 2014 and placing themselves amongst elite company.
X user College Football Zone posted the highest scoring offenses in the College Football Playoffs era since 2014, and UCF ranked sixth on the list. The Knights averaged a whopping 48.2 points per game in their undefeated season.
The Knights joined some historic program powerhouses, and it was before their move to the Big 12 five years later. Coach Scott Frost was in his second year at UCF and flipped the team from 5-7 to 13-0.
McKenzie Milton, currently the quarterback coach, commanded the most explosive offense in 2017. Milton had a career year, throwing for 4,037 yards, 37 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
He added 603 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 106 carries to his season totals, bringing him to over 4,500 yards and 45 touchdowns.
The Kapolei, Hawaii native, lit up the Memphis Tigers in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game on Dec. 12. In a high-scoring double overtime shootout to keep UCF's undefeated record alive, Milton threw for 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Milton helped put the Knights in scoring position with a 20-yard completion followed by a 9-yard run, leading to a 1-yard touchdown by running back Otis Anderson.
The Knights' defense forced an interception against the Tigers' quarterback, Riley Ferguson, to seal the game and crown themselves as the AAC champions.
UCF's offense became a nightmare for defenses to handle in 2017, as they put up a 73-point performance against Austin Peay. The program defeated its opponents by an average margin of 22.92 points.
Even after Frost accepted a coaching position at Nebraska, his alma mater, the Knights remained a high-scoring offense, averaging over 40 points per game until 2021.
Since 2021, UCF has struggled to reach the offensive heights it exhibited in 2017, and last season was the closest they reached at 36.2 points.
Frost returned for his second tenure, and with Steve Cooper as his offensive coordinator, the Knights' offense regained some juice. After adding impactful transfers and retaining key talent, UCF's offense could see another resurgence and return to its high-scoring glory days.
