James Madison transfer Alonza Barnett III brings dual-threat prowess and leadership to UCF, poised to solve quarterback woes and elevate the Knights' offense.

The UCF Knights added 31 new players from January's transfer portal cycle, and Alonza Barnett III — their most championed signing — became UCF's top 2026 newcomer in the Big 12.

Billy Tucker, an ESPN writer, compiled a list of all the top newcomers for each Big 12 team on Wednesday. He explained his selections, what to expect from them and what their coaches had to say.

Tucker chose Barnett III because of the Knights' quarterback issues last season due to inconsistency and injuries, and he believes the James Madison transfer is the solution for coach Scott Frost

"As a multiyear starter at James Madison, Barnett brings elite intangibles, leadership and a proven dual-threat profile, having guided James Madison to a College Football Playoff berth," Tucker wrote. "He posted 5,433 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, alongside 1,075 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns over 27 starts (21-6 record). Barnett brings a competitive edge and professionalism that is essential in providing stability and high-level production at the position for the Knights."

Frost is fond of dual-threat quarterbacks, as they possess the ability to dissect the defense through the air and on the ground. Former UCF quarterbacks Tayven Jackson, Jacurri Brown and Davi Belfort performed well in Frost's system.

When defenses tightly covered the receivers, each quarterback extended the play with their legs. Tucker expects an ideal fit for Barnett III in Frost's scheme, despite needing an uptick in some areas to become consistent at the Power 4 level.

"While his career completion percentage might need a slight uptick for Power 4 consistency, his high production (49 pass touchdowns, 23 rush touchdowns) and low interception rate (13 interceptions) showcase his efficiency and ability to make things happen," Tucker wrote. "He's expected to elevate UCF's offensive identity, provide crucial leadership and elevate the performance of those around him, bringing a winning mentality that should provide more consistent success for UCF in 2026."

Tucker's analysis of the Knights' new starting quarterback aligns with Frost's analysis. Frost spoke about UCF's transfer portal class at the end of January and explained why he targeted Barnett III.

"Alonza is a proven winner and exactly the type of quarterback we want leading our program," Frost said. "He'll stand in the pocket and make throws, he can use his legs when he needs to, and he competes every snap. On top of that, his production speaks for itself, and the way he carries himself as a teammate and leader makes him a perfect fit for the culture we're building at UCF.

Consistent recognition from the media continues to build up the hype surrounding the Knights' star quarterback. The expectations are high for Barnett III, who came off a College Football Playoffs appearance and joined a program that missed a bowl game for two straight seasons.

Barnett III's journey as UCF's leader started when the Knights started preparing for spring football recently, but all eyes will be on him when his team opens the season against Bethune-Cookman on Sep. 3 at the Acrisure Bounce House.
