A secret meeting in Philadelphia. Former AD Bill Moos details his pursuit of Scott Frost, revealing key moments and his ultimate decision to hire the coach.
Coach Scott Frost was at the top of college football when the 2017 UCF Knights accomplished an undefeated season, but behind the scenes, he was interviewed for another job.
Former Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos appeared on 93.7 The Ticket's Early Break show on Wednesday morning and recalled his time finding a new coach to lead the Cornhuskers.
"Scott was having an incredible year," Moos said. "That's when I brought [Matt] Davison because Tom Osborne said, 'You want to get to Scott, bring Davison in here. They're best friends.' So I sent Matt as my conduit to Scott, and there was no interest."
Although Nebraska is Frost's alma mater, he turned a UCF Knight team that went winless in 2015 into an undefeated team in 2017. Despite Moos' learning about Frost's disinterest in leading the Cornhuskers, he was steadfast in nailing his hiring.
He revealed on the show that he had a secret meeting with Frost in Philadelphia that nobody was aware of.
"I wanted to go one-on-one with Scott," Moos said. "We had it all set up, and Kendra [Moos] had the room all set up as she always does. And, in comes Scott with Gerrod Lambrecht, who I didn't even know who he was. They were both in sweats, hadn't shaved, and to me, that's a red flag right there."
Throughout all the red flags, Moos still hired Frost in 2018 to become Nebraska's new coach, and it did not pan out. Frost led the Cornhuskers for four seasons before being let go after the first three games of 2022.
He had a 16-31 record with his alma mater, and 23 of the 31 losses were within single digits. 12 of those games were within five points as well.
After Frost was fired, he took a break for one year before becoming a senior analyst for the Los Angeles Rams in 2024. Now, he's back with the team he coached to national glory.
Frost and the UCF Knights ended the 2025 season with a 5-7 record, ultimately missing out on a bowl game. However, as he prepares for the second season of his second tenure, Frost went out and rebuilt his program to compete for next year.
The UCF Knights brought in 15 new 2026 recruits and 31 new transfers from last month's transfer portal window. Frost has a clear vision for how he wants to build his program and become a contender in a tough Big 12 conference.
