From architecting the high-flying Daunte Culpepper era to toppling Alabama, the offensive mastermind joins the program's elite after decades of elevating Knights football to national prominence.
Lake Brantley’s football team erupted with cheers, clapping for former UCF Knights coach Mike Kruczek for his induction into the school’s hall of fame.
Kruczek started his coaching tenure at UCF as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1985 to 1997. He coached Darin Slack, another UCF Hall of Famer, when the program was in Division II.
Slack set the precedent for great quarterback play for the Knights. He led the team to the Division II National Semifinals built on the back of a stellar senior season in 1987.
The Knights faced Troy, which ultimately ended their run to the Division II championship game.
The Casslebury, Florida, native threw for 3,054 yards (the first UCF passer to throw for 3,000+ in a season) and a then-school-best 26 touchdowns. Kruczek revolutionized the offense, sending all the receivers deep and letting Slack’s arm power the offense.
UCF promoted him to head coach in 1998. He now led a young program that ascended to Division I-A (FBS) two seasons earlier.
Kruczek coached another UCF great in Daunte Culpepper, who broke most of Slack’s records in his senior year. Culpepper led the NCAA in completion percentage (73.6%) in 1998, breaking Steve Young’s 15-year record.
He could’ve declared for the NFL draft in his junior season, but returned for his senior season. UCF posted a 9-2 record, only losing to Auburn and Purdue.
Arguably, Kruczek’s greatest achievement isn’t coaching Slack or Culpepper; it’s upsetting an SEC powerhouse in its stadium.
The Knights traveled to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on Oct. 28, 2000. Kruczek powered his team to a thrilling 40-38 victory, a historic achievement that the program celebrates annually.
His tenure as coach ended in 2003 before transitioning to the NFL. The Arizona Cardinals hired him as the quarterbacks coach from 2004 to 2006 and promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2006.
After a brief stint in the NFL, he coached in the UFL before the league collapsed in 2012. Kruczek returned to college to coach UMass in 2012.
After one season in college, Kruczek was hired by Trinity Prep to be its head coach. He served in that role from 2013 to 2022.
Now, the UCF Hall of Famer is the offensive coordinator for Lake Brantley High School, coaching with his son, Garrett Kruczek.
UCF’s ascension to Division I is largely credited to Mike Kruczek, who coached great quarterbacks. His name is now immortalized in school history.
