The former Knights standout shattered undrafted free agent records in New England, securing a high-value guarantee as he battles for a roster spot in a competitive backfield.
Former UCF running back Myles Montgomery penned a record-breaking contract with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent on Thursday morning.
Montgomery signed a three-year deal worth $272,500 in combined guarantees. He has a $247,500 salary guarantee plus a $25,000 signing bonus in his deal.
His contract surpasses the previous record for the Patriots when they signed tight end C.J. Dippre last offseason. Dippre signed for $264,000, which Montgomery and cornerback Channing Canada ($267,500) surpassed this offseason.
Montgomery's salary guarantee is the full-season rate for a maximum practice squad contract, suggesting New England was impressed with the former Knight.
Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson lead the Patriots' running back room, meaning Montgomery will fight for a spot on the depth chart with Lan Larison, Terrell Jennings and New England's seventh-round draft pick, Jam Miller.
Montgomery spent his first two years at Cincinnati and final two at UCF, tallying 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns on 274 carries.
The Jacksonville, Florida, native had no starting experience in three years before leading the Knights in his senior season. He finished his senior campaign running for 705 yards and four touchdowns on 143 carries, and added 182 yards on 17 receptions.
Montgomery said he's willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win despite having one year of starting experience under his belt.
"They're going to get somebody who's going to embrace their role, whatever it is, on and off the field and try to help the team continue to win ball games," Montgomery said at UCF's pro day.
Jimmy Beal, UCF's running back coach, said Montgomery is going to make a team love him with his work ethic, and now, that team is the Patriots.
"He's going to work," Beal said last Friday. "He's going to do whatever. He's going to make somebody love him. And I think that's the cool thing is that he's never going to show any kind of remorse or whatever for it. He's just going to do it."
Montgomery signed with the Patriots after going undrafted and impressed the team throughout rookie minicamp, earning the full-season rate for a maximum practice squad contract and will continue competing for a spot on New England's running back depth chart.
