After a record-breaking seven-touchdown performance, Pitt's dual-threat star faces a violent UCF defense determined to cage the pocket and erase their road woes in this non-conference showdown.
The UCF Knights' defense has one goal in mind for Saturday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Acrisure Stadium: contain quarterback Mason Heintschel.
Heintschel arguably had the best Week 1 performance in college football, throwing for a career-high 453 yards and seven touchdowns on 31-for-41 passing in Pittsburgh's 59-14 victory over Miami (OH). It eclipses his previous best of 423 yards against NC State and four touchdowns against Boston College last October.
The sophomore shined making accurate throws on the line and extending plays with his legs when the pocket collapsed.
Defensive tackle Horace Lockett highlighted that the emphasis for Saturday’s game is to “cage the quarterback,” and “stop the run.” Pittsburgh has a deep, talented backfield featuring Ja’Kyrian Turner and Justin Cook, who broke open a 50-yard touchdown on his lone carry against Miami (OH).
Lockett complemented the Panthers’ offensive line, citing their physicality when blocking incoming pressure, and said the Knights’ defense possesses the same traits.
“We’re going to be violent,” Lockett said during Monday’s media availability. “We play as a team, we play as 11 as one. So, everybody’s flowing to the ball, everybody’s being dominant.”
The focus this season is generating turnovers, improving an area they struggled with last season. UCF got off to a good start forcing an interception and a strip sack against Bethune-Cookman.
It must replicate a similar performance against another Power Four program and a dual-threat quarterback who can extend broken plays.
There is another goal besides containing Heintschel; coming out victorious for Sincere Edwards, a former Panther, and Duke Watson, who got injured in Louisville’s matchup against them on Nov. 11, 2024.
“We want this game for him (Edwards) as much as he wanted it for everybody else,” Lockett said. “But I know this means a lot to see just as much as it means to Duke Watson.”
Edwards started all 13 games for Pittsburgh in his freshman campaign in 2024 and tallied three sacks and 17 tackles (eight solo).
Watson rushed for 69 yards on 11 carries in Louisville’s 37-9 victory.
Saturday’s game is also a test for the Knights to rid themselves of their road woes from last season. They did not win a game away from the Acrisure Bounce House, contributing to the program missing a bowl game for a second straight season.
The toughest non-conference matchup for UCF is a measuring stick for how the team can perform against other Power Four programs before Big 12 play starts in Week 4 against Texas Christian.
