Pioneering champions forged a legacy. Relive the 1975-76 squad's groundbreaking season as UCF honors its basketball roots.

The 1975-76 UCF men's basketball team built the foundation for the current iteration of Knights basketball, and the program will celebrate the team's 50th anniversary on Saturday.

In 1975-76, the Knights went 20-5 (10-0 conference play) in the inaugural Sunshine State Conference and were crowned conference champions. At the time, UCF was known as Florida Technological University, which it changed to its current name in 1978.

Coach Torchy Clark and assistant coach Ray Ridenour led the Knights. Clark was successful on and off the court, heralded as a great mind ahead of his time.

"Torchy Clark was a great coach who was way ahead of his time in the game of basketball," Sidelines UCF posted on X. "His book covering full court presses and fastbreak offense was on the desk of a lot of college coaches."

Clark is featured in the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame, including four players he coached: Bo Clark, Bennie Shaw, Jerry Prather and Calvin Lingelbach.

The five Hall of Famers helped the team become the first in UCF history to make the NCAA Division II Tournament. Shaw became the first player to get drafted to the NBA from UCF.

"That's something no one would ever take away from you, no matter how many records they break," Shaw said.

UCF will honor the 1975-76 squad when the team plays the Baylor Bears at the Addition Financial Arena. Saturday's game presents the Pioneers with the opportunity to interact with the new Knights players.

Lingelbach reflected on an experience he had in the early 2000s with a UCF player.

"Just the other day at a basketball game, one of the former players came up to me," Lingelbach recalled. "He played about 30 years after I did, but we've built a relationship from being around the games and practices. That's what's so cool for an old man like me — looking back and still being able to connect with the younger guys every once in a while and share those moments."

The 1975-76 UCF squad set the foundation for future teams to follow — especially today's team led by coach Johnny Dawkins, who clinched back-to-back 20-win campaigns and earned his third upset of the season against No. 19 Brigham Young.

Saturday's game against the Bears will tip off at 8 p.m. on FS1.
